Desktop icon shadows in Windows 11

ACha -

Hello

After a Windows 11 update, shadows appeared under the names of the desktop icons.
In - performance options - I unchecked - use shadows for icon names on the desktop - then I clicked - apply - with no results!
I’m losing it!

Could this be another bug from Microsoft? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Shadow under the font of Desktop icons:

The shadow under the font on the desktop can be removed again.

So it was a bug.

Fixed thanks to KB5031455 from 27/10/2023.

Procedure in the Windows registry:

Windows + R

Type =► regedit

Click on =► OK

[Where to type ''regedit'' in the ''Search'' box on the taskbar]

Go to this registry key:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Search for ListviewShadow in the right window and double-click on it.
Modify the value:

 0 = disabled - No shadow is displayed behind (under) the font on the desktop 1 = enabled - The shadow is displayed by default under the font.

Example with shadow enabled:

1 = Enabled (Hexadecimal or Decimal base, it doesn't matter, prefer Hexadecimal)

Close the Windows registry.

Restart the PC for the change to take effect.

Or

Right-click on the taskbar, open the task manager, and restart =► explorer.exe

Configure the font shadow on Desktop icons for all user accounts:

If there are issues with the shadow coming back from time to time or if you want to set it up like this for all user accounts!

Windows + R

Type =► regedit

Click on =► OK

Go to this registry key:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\ListviewShadow

Search for DefaultValue in the right window and double-click on it.
Modify the value:

 0 = The shadow is disabled 1 = The shadow is enabled again

Example with shadow enabled:

1 = Enabled (Hexadecimal base).

Restart the PC or restart the explorer.exe process

A+

Hello, let's put an end to those shadows!

Reset the multi-display settings of Windows 10

Run command (Windows key + R)

regedit

  • Then, navigate to the following location by pasting the path into the address bar of the registry editor: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
  • In the left pane, locate the following keys:
    • Configuration
    • Connectivity
    • ScaleFactors
  • Right-click and Delete in the context menu on each of the keys
  • Restart your Windows 10 PC for the changes to take effect

The shadows have disappeared like magic... thank you Santa Claus....

Hello,

The ''ShadowOff '' (Shadow disabled) is no longer working on Windows 11 since the update KB5030310 on certain PCs.

The preliminary update KB5030310 from September 2023 forces a shadow font on desktop icons.

This certainly doesn't affect a lot of people.

Desktop icon themes:Contrast

But some have made this change because the font was more readable (for them) without shadows on the desktop.

---------------------------------------------.

Windows + R

Copy and paste:

 C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesPerformance.exe

Tab =► Visual Effects

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To remove the shadow, you must uncheck the box ''Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop'', but that's not enough.

Desktop icon themes:

You must also not ''Allow themes to change desktop icons'':

Windows + R

 rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,0

No solution found :

Microsoft has received feedback on the issue of desktop icon shadows in its Feedback Hub.

A future update is hoped to resolve the problem.

Solution to test :

In the search (or Magnifier) on the taskbar, type =► Regedit

Then press the keyboard's enter key.

=► Back up the Windows Registry

Navigate to this registry key:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

In the right pane, double-click on the key ==►FontSmoothing

Be careful, there are several FontSmoothing keys.

Do not open these registry keys FontSmoothing below:

 FontSmoothingGamma FontSmoothingOrientation FontSmoothingType

Once in the ''FontSmoothing'' dialog, delete the number 2 and type 0 (Zero).

Click on =►OK

Close the Windows Registry.

Restart the PC.

Info :

FontSmoothing == 2 (Enabled).

FontSmoothing == 0 (Disabled).

Ongoing discussions:

ghost writing, shadow font on Windows 11 desktop icons

Discussion excerpts:

  An emergency solution: I invoked the contrast design under designs, which, like yours, offers a black desktop with white lettering (without shadows)! I then recalled the display settings of the now existing contrast design and under "Personalization", I selected my previously used custom design with a freely chosen image and label without shadows. And there it was: my desired old design was adopted without any problem WITHOUT shadow marking! However, Office also now has a contrast look, which may be a lesser evil!

Uninstalling the update KB5030310 (lots of bugs with this updatewould be a solution, but this update is essential to upgrade to W11 version 23h2 (referred to as the moment 4 update).

Thank you pistouri!!!

I did everything including setting FontSmoothing to 0.

But nothing works.

Conclusion: wait for a fix from Microsoft......

Thanks again

It's not yet won for a possible W11 (Windows Update) fix!!!

 The removal of font shadows under desktop icons no longer works starting from Windows 11 23H2. This is exactly the subject of the issue and I ......

==► Source

One person already on version 23 h 2, probably thanks to the Insider program (testing W11 before a stable public release), notices this same issue with icon shadows.

* A registry key was modified during the optional update KB5030310

A workaround may be found in the meantime.
