Validation code sent on YouTube?

Hello,
A friend is unable to access the security settings of his Gmail account due to two-step verification: first, he receives a code via SMS (no problem there), but when he wants to change a setting, he is asked for verification again, but this time with a code sent to the YouTube app on his phone.
I’ve never heard of this and I can’t find any information online. So, he downloaded the app on his phone, but there’s no sign of any notifications. This operation has been repeated several times without receiving anything, and Gmail has ended up temporarily blocking his account due to too many unsuccessful attempts!
Could someone tell me what exactly is going on and what can be done?
Thank you very much in advance!

a hello, a reply, a thank you are always appreciated.-
Thank you. I will check with him, but according to him, he has never received any Google invites, nor has he even activated two-step authentication...
Yes, anyway he only has one Gmail account, so there’s no risk of confusion on that front.
I’ll check this with him because as you might have guessed, he doesn’t know much about this area.
By the way, while I’m at it (but let me know if you prefer that I open another thread), due to a mishap he deleted (emptying the trash) almost all emails from his webmail. However, since he has a POP setup, his emails are still in the Mail app on his iPhone. The big question is whether if we switch his account to IMAP now, will the sync go in the right direction and will the emails be properly restored in the webmail, rather than the other way around, which would be just catastrophic?Open a new post in this forum.
