Hello,

Following a "fix" created by a specialist from another forum, my PC opens to an "Automatic Repair" window, where I can choose to "Reset the PC." But each time, I am asked for the password, which I no longer remember.

I have therefore browsed the Internet and tried "Linux Ubuntu." I followed this tutorial online, but there is a moment where I do not understand what I need to do, as I know nothing about Linux.

Could someone decode the message below for me and tell me what to do, please?

Hello

Updating from a CD-ROM is useless, because the day after its creation it is out of date, everything is done online.

A forgotten password means a reinstallation and the creation of a "reserved" password.

This is part of the learning process of using Ubuntu.

Hello,

By searching a bit, you will find other more "user-friendly" tools to do this.

Best regards.

Hello,

Before diving into the heart of the matter, here are a few preliminary explanations that seem necessary for you to understand what is happening and what you need to do.

Prerequisites

Under Linux, software (including those you need to reset your Windows password) is installed through packages, provided by software sources.

Each software source is characterized by

  • the distribution (Ubuntu)
  • the release of your distribution (here jammy, with version number 22.04),
  • the repository (for example universe)
  • its address (either a CD-ROM address if the repository is stored on a CD/DVD/USB drive, or an Internet address)

Installing / updating / uninstalling software thus involves installing / updating / uninstalling the corresponding package (and any packages it depends on). On Ubuntu, this is the role of the apt command. Since this requires administrative rights, it is preceded by sudo (super user, do...).

The range of installable packages depends on the configured repositories.

  • during installation, Ubuntu configures the repository associated with the installation media
  • if the network is properly configured, it replaces them with Internet repositories
  • this range of software is updated every time the command is run: sudo apt update
  • in practice, apt queries all the repositories configured in /etc/apt/sources.list or in one of the files contained in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/.

Once the sources are configured, we ask the package manager (the equivalent of the Google store or the Apple store on mobile) which packages we want to install/update/remove (in your case, the package that interests you is chntpwd which likely means "change NT password").

Explanation of the problem

Now that you have the basics, here is an explanation of what you are currently experiencing:

The software you need is provided by a repository (universe) that is not enabled by default. You need to enable it so that chntpwd appears among the available packages.

  • Being able to use this repository (on the Internet) requires a functional and correctly configured Internet connection under Ubuntu.

It is possible that this package requires dependencies that are not provided by the currently configured CD-ROM repository.

  • At this stage, your /etc/apt/sources.list does not contain any internet repositories. Ideally, you need to correct /etc/apt/sources.list accordingly.
  • Modifying this file requires root rights.
  • Again, this relates to Internet repositories, which require a functional and correctly configured Internet connection under Ubuntu to be usable.

Problem resolution

Assuming your Internet connection is functional, type the following command to correct /etc/apt/sources.list:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Replace the contents of this file based on this page:

Your /etc/apt/sources.list file should therefore contain:

deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-security main restricted deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates main restricted # Source repositories (only useful for downloading sources with apt-get source. In this case, remove the #) # deb-src http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted # deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-security main restricted # deb-src http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates main restricted deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy universe multiverse deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-security universe multiverse deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates universe multiverse # Source repositories (only useful for downloading sources with apt-get source. In this case, remove the #) # deb-src http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy universe multiverse # deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-security universe multiverse # deb-src http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates universe multiverse

... which can be rewritten in abbreviated form (after removing commented lines that begin with #, and merging lines that can be merged)

deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted universe multiverse deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-security main restricted universe multiverse deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates main restricted universe multiverse

Save and exit, then in your terminal, run:

sudo apt update sudo apt install chntpw

If the package installs correctly, all you have to do is continue your tutorial.

Good luck
