Which linux distro for a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D 1C7

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite C660D-1C7 E-350 with Radeon HD 6310 that I've had for a long time. I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on it, but I'm having graphic issues.

The system runs fairly well, but sometimes it feels sluggish; it even lags with an SSD, so I'm wondering if this system might be too recent and if there could be incompatibilities with my machine.

I'm questioning whether I should keep this system and try to find the graphic driver or if I should change my system and adopt a distro that would be compatible.

Knowing that I do web programming and use some tools like Docker, VSCode, Insomnia, and others.

    Hello,

    It's no surprise that this PC struggles with Ubuntu, as the processor (AMD Dual-Core E-300 APU) is quite weak; it may have done the job in 2012, but nowadays it's no longer up to the task. Moreover, Ubuntu is not exactly lightweight since Gnome 3 requires quite a bit of graphical resources.

    You can try a lighter graphical interface than Gnome by installing, for example, Xfce with the command sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop

    Once that’s done, log out, and when you log back in, choose the Xfce desktop. The interface should be slightly more responsive, but it won't work miracles since the bottleneck is the processor.

    As for graphical issues, it's likely they'll be the same with another distro because the drivers will be the same. It's highly probable that the proprietary catalyst driver for your Radeon card no longer exists for recent versions of Ubuntu.

      As jns55 says, you can install a lighter version of Ubuntu, for example xubuntu or even lubuntu. As he mentioned, if Ubuntu is already installed, just install the xubuntu-desktop package to switch from Ubuntu to Xubuntu.

      I made the transition to Xubuntu, the problem is that it went very well at first but I'm getting errors that sometimes prevent me from shutting down the PC.

      Is Lubuntu lighter than Xubuntu?

      Normally yes, it's based on LXDE. The package in question is lubuntu-desktop. After that, you need to look into the causes of your errors, maybe it has nothing to do with XFCE (the interface of Xubuntu).
