Disk space issue although not full

Good evening,

I have been experiencing problems with my Windows 11 computer for a few months:

Often when I want to move large files to one of my HDDs (I have a 230GB SSD, a 320GB HDD, and another 1TB HDD), I get an error message saying "disk full" or "hard drive full."

However, there is still enough space to perform the task, so I will try to explain more clearly here:

Here is the error (screenshot attached) I receive when I try to unzip photos and videos downloaded from my Cloud (which is indeed full, it seems...). The file is 4.00GB and the files inside should not exceed 5 or 6GB (I think), and yet despite having 79.9GB remaining, the action cannot be completed because the disk is "full." Any method gives the same result.

I get the same type of error on my other 320GB disk, but when there are about 30GB free. To work around the problem, I have to free up space on this same hard drive; one could consider the disk to be full when there are 79.9GB "free" on my 1TB disk. This is a rather frustrating issue; I imagine it comes from my partitions being poorly configured or something like that...
Could someone help me resolve this problem?

    Hello,

    How much space do you have left on C:? Because it's from the Windows partition that files are decompressed before being transferred to D:

    So, if your C: is also full, it's normal that it's stuck.

      I thought about it, it’s true I have 8.60 GB free on this SSD, but as I said, the error showed up with 8.60 GB free on C: and 79.9 GB free on D:, but no error with C: having 8.60 GB free, so the same with >85 GB free on D:.

      In other words, C: is not saturated and the problem disappears when I free up space on D:

      It’s as if 79.9 GB represented 0 GB free. By the way, I managed to free up a lot of space on this same drive, so I shouldn’t be bothered for a while… But I would obviously appreciate a solution because it just postpones the problem.

    With the same folder size to unzip?

    Anyway, 9 GB free on C: is way too little for Windows to operate and perform its updates.

    You would need at least 25/30 GB free.

    I advise you to invest in an external HDD because if you catch a Ransomware or if the HDD/SSD fails, you lose everything.

      The compressed file in question was 4.00 GB, stored on the 1 TB HDD, while the files inside did not exceed 5 GB.

      I use my local drive for everything related to software/Windows/3D printing, which takes up quite a bit of space, but I often fluctuate between 0 and 30 GB free depending on usage. The data, games, and software that are too storage-intensive go on my HDDs. It’s probably too little for Windows, but it seems to be enough. And if I'm going to buy a new hard drive, I would prefer to get an NVMe anyway.
      But that's not the problem; as I mentioned, my local drive gives me a disk full message when I’m at 0 GB free, but I get the same message on my other HDDs at 79.9 GB and around 20/30 GB free, which is quite annoying.

      But the problem comes back no matter what I use, even if I copy from one disk to another, as long as the disk has 79.9GB free, it won't take it anymore.

    and checked that your drives are in NTFS?

      Yes, I had already tried and my drives are indeed in NTFS.

      I encountered the problem when trying to install a mod on Assetto Corsa (around 2 GB), on the 320 GB E: drive which had about 20 to 30 GB left and on C: about 17 as I recall. However, Content Manager shows me an error message "Insufficient Disk Space"... I tried several times and always got the same error. So I decided to try manually by copying the mod files into the game files and still the same issue, but this time Windows told me that there was 2.87 GB of space missing (that's precise, I think I'll remember it for life, it traumatized me ????). I spent hours restarting the PC, freeing up space on C: which I managed to increase to 25 GB thinking it was also due to the cache, and trying again, etc. But the amount never changed by a hundredth of a GB, it was always 2.87 GB. Then I decided to make space on that drive even though there were still 20 to 30 GB left, I managed to free up to 45 GB even, and then it worked… And I remember seeing something that I could extend that was indicated as full; it was something like pool, I think.
