Hello,
I have a long Word document with a table of contents. I want to insert references to chapters in the body of the document.
Initially, I created bookmarks and made hyperlinks to those bookmarks. I like the format of the links BUT since I am still changing the order of my document, I have to modify the chapter numbers every time (since it changes the name of the bookmark). So, I am considering references, which should solve this problem BUT
- the link is not visible like a hyperlink (even though it exists)
- it indicates the chapter name but not its number
Is there a solution that allows me to have everything I want?

Good evening,
You have taken the wrong paths.
A title is made with a heading style (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.).
Titles have automatic bookmarks, so we never add bookmarks to titles.
The numbering of titles updates automatically after adding or deleting new titles, text, etc.
Links to titles are references. We can create two consecutive references, the first to insert the title number, the second to insert the title text. And all of this updates automatically. In the worst case, we select everything (Ctrl+A) and update (F9).
Look here:

Regarding the format, nothing prevents you from creating a character format for these references (blue + underlined for example).

Hello.
I think you could create a macro, or juggle with the controls, fields, and switches
