Inkscape: Inverted Cut

Hello,

I started learning Inkscape for the creation of a logo for a forum.
So far, everything is going pretty well, except that I would like to reverse the cut function and I can't find how to do it despite my research.

To be clearer, here is the problem in question in the image:

Basically, I want to remove the center of the letter R so that the background is visible. The problem is that the cut function only allows me to keep the center. I found a trick with "Path/exclusion," but it doesn't work (probably because the background texture comes from a JPEG).

If anyone has an idea to help me, thank you in advance.

In order for the exclusion to work, you need to have 2 paths.. Make a path around your letter "R" and exclude the center...
    Normally it should work..
I think you should be able to turn your letter into a path.. there seems to be a function for that..
If you have multiple levels, use the layers.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply,

I have already tried that. The thing is that the letters are not made with the "Text Object" function. I drew them myself using the "Bézier Curve Tool"
Here are my two traced outlines and my JPEG background image. No matter how much I convert my outlines to paths, I can never extract the center. There's something I'm missing.

Why can't we simply do the cutting function in reverse? This one only keeps the center of an outline; why can't it just exclude it?

If you have drawn the letter, check that your path is continuous. If you have a break, it won't work.

I don't use Inkscape every day... Check if there is an order to follow... that is to say, the shape to exclude must be on the one to engrave, or vice versa. On Corel, you need to respect this.

The path is indeed continuous. If I perform boolean operations just with the outlines, it works. The problem seems to come from the golden background image.
I've tried all the orders, but it doesn't work any better. I tried with a simple circle, but I can't exclude just that one from the background image.
I really don't know what to do; no matter how much I search, I can't find anyone in the same situation as me.

You have 2 shapes, by selecting both, the one on top will crush the one below using the exclusion function....

I don't really understand what you want to do....

Can you provide an example on www.cjoint.com?

        I finally succeeded.

I used "combine" with my two outlines and then made a cut on my background. It worked, but now, when I try again, it doesn't work anymore. There's an order that I still don't get.

I attached the link to the letter. You can go back by removing the cut and the combination of the two outlines.

Combining the 2 outlines allows you to extrude the center of the other surface (you hollow out the center of the "R")

If you select both objects at the same time

and you click on "Object/cut/define" .. you should find your letter "R" filled with your image..
