Last night while I was walking around town with my boyfriend, I received a message from him (a heart kiss emoji like we often send each other). He tells me he didn't send me anything, that his phone was in his pocket. Do you think the app sent me that emoji on its own? Have you ever had similar cases? A phone sending a message by itself while it's in a pocket? I find it strange, I think he might have wanted to send that to someone else but simply sent it to me by mistake. He, of course, says no and doesn't understand. Please help me...

Could it have been delayed? If either of your two phones wasn’t connected to the network at the time of sending, it might have arrived when it regained connectivity.
(On my phone, it sometimes happens that when it loses the network, it doesn’t attempt to reconnect by itself for quite a while… so I occasionally receive messages with a delay.)
