VMware Workstation Pro || have a different IP and network

Hello,
I have a problem with VMware,

to make it simple, I want to be able to connect my virtual machine to another Wi-Fi network. Such as the hotspot from my phone (an iPhone, for example).
So that my host PC and the virtual machine do not share the same connection and have nothing in common.

I have tried a lot without success, so if anyone knows if this is possible or not.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

The VM does not have access to the host's hardware. The network adapter offered by VMware in the VM is only the one from the vmnetcfg network configurator. So it's either an internet network coming from the physical machine's connection or a local network.

The only possibility I would consider is to test a USB Wi-Fi adapter, as USB hardware is not shared between the two machines (physical and virtual); at any given moment, it is only connected to one of the two.

Okay, thanks for the idea, I'll try it tomorrow and I'll let you know if it works out.

I tested it and it's a solution that works; the USB adapter connected to the VM allows it to have a Wi-Fi network independent of the physical machine.

Having 2 USB Wi-Fi adapters that are about fifteen years old, the hardest part was getting them to work with the W10 of the VM; the first one was impossible, and the second one's app doesn't work either, but the installed drivers allow Wi-Fi connection where I had to use a Wi-Fi network without an identifier since there was no WPA2 at that time.

It's indeed interesting, although full of limitations.
Does the host machine not see the Wi-Fi adapter or the network?

Alright, I'll try tomorrow with a USB WIFI, I'm on Windows 10 but if I get a modern one it should maybe work, thanks for the advice.

With VMware, a USB device is only recognized on one machine; if you want to see it in the VM, you have to connect it there, which will cause it to disconnect from the physical machine.

Hi,
a virtual machine that has nothing in common with its real host is still quite similar to a real machine, when you think about it.

Yes, that's the idea; I would like to have a sort of second computer but on my machine.

Yes,
but there are limits, otherwise you'll ruin the business :-)

It doesn't change much for a classic VM as such, just in my specific case I need 2 different IPs and on the same computer it's more convenient. I already have a small laptop, but it's slow and it's not practical.
