Could you please tell me what the process is to convert a Calc table into Writer so that I don't have to retype all my data?

Hello,
There are several ways to proceed.
The first thing to do is to select the table in Calc and copy it (Ctrl C).
In Writer, you can:
- either do a special paste (Edit tab) then Special Paste > Spreadsheet
- or already create a table with the same number of rows and columns as the original table in Calc and paste it into that table.
There will obviously be some tweaks to make.
