Hello,
I have just acquired a Dazzle DVD Recorder HD with Pinnacle Studio 23 (included in the pack), but upon acquisition, I notice that the video quality is very poor. Additionally, the image skips from time to time. I have tried changing the resolution settings but to no avail. I want to specify that when I view my tapes on a TV screen, the quality is perfectly fine. I am transferring from a Sony DCR-TRV120E camcorder, and the tapes are in Video8 format (for the older ones) as well as HI8.
After many attempts that took me all day, I will have to return this pack if I do not achieve better video output quality. I am therefore counting on your help to remedy this issue.
Thank you sincerely.

Hello,
It may be the same problem that some of us are experiencing. If you are on the latest updated version of Windows 10 (20 04), there is a software bug. (according to COREL)
After an email exchange with COREL, you'll read below an excerpt from the last response I received. (I haven't had time to try it)
Hoping it works. Have a good day.
(...)
- Download the latest Pinnacle Studio Dazzle software: https://www.pinnaclesys.com/fr/landing/download/
- Run the downloaded file "PinnacleForDazzle_ESD.exe"
- In the installer, select "Remove" and "Delete content".
- The installer will remove the problematic version of Pinnacle Studio Dazzle.
- Plug in your Dazzle device and run the downloaded installer again.
- The latest version of Pinnacle Studio Dazzle will install.
- Once completed, start Pinnacle Studio for Dazzle and check the capture with the Dazzle box.
Currently, capture with Dazzle in Pinnacle Studio 24 (or in previous versions) is not available.
Furthermore, the Pinnacle Studio Dazzle software will not launch if Pinnacle Studio 24 is installed.
So if you want to capture with Dazzle, Pinnacle Studio 24 must be uninstalled.

Here you go, @glandu spoke well (hi and best wishes to all) You need to understand this old video and not ask it for today's characteristics...
The values he mentions are perfectly in line with those old videos... (see the data rate 8gHz..?? I think it's rather 8mHz..)
-- another point... it is always wise to have an old PC on hand instead of rushing after Windows 10... A desktop PC with XP or Win 7 or even Ubuntu, which works properly... doesn't break a duck's legs...! but with a Dazzle or a capture card, it gets the job done quietly and you can use your other PC in the meantime. It can also do other things that become complicated under Win 10...

Thank you Jeannets and all my best wishes as well,
As you said, I maybe shouldn't have parted with my old desktop PC with XP; however, it would have required numerous repairs. I can still play my 8MM tapes on my HI8 camcorder, but it's not eternal (it's 20 years old) and is likely to break down. That's why I want to anticipate and transfer all my 8MM tapes (about a hundred).
Thanks again for your help
Best regards

Hello,
We need to know the settings you made on your system...
We must admit that the tapes from that time are not HD definitions... how old are they??
When played on the TV, is it also with the camcorder or another VCR??
We also need to check the quality of the wired connections in your setup... you need "shielded" wires and far from nearby electromagnetic interference... (smartphone for example and other light dimmers.)
Especially the parameter settings should not try to match today’s HD videos... laid-back settings..!

Hello and thank you for your reply,
I tried to make my acquisitions by altering the settings numerous times. The latest one was HD 1080p MPEG-4 1920x1080 and 25 frames/sec, but there's no improvement. I use the same camcorder for playback on TV as I do for making my acquisitions via Dazzle. This image quality must have degraded over time (the oldest of my tapes are about thirty years old). When I talk about degradation of quality from the Dazzle output, I mean that the video is practically unreadable. It's important to know that my priority is to recover all my tapes and transfer them to my PC's hard drive (with sufficient quality before my camcorder fails me, so I'm less interested in the actual editing). Not long ago, I was using an internal capture card (Studio DV) on a tower PC, I unblocked the DV input of my camcorder (via a small software) and the output quality was optimal... but unfortunately, that PC has passed away. Do you know of another way to transfer my 8MM and HI8 tapes to a laptop without too much loss?
Thanks again for your help

Hello friends, I will follow Jeannets' advice and Jack's observation. Let's not lose sight of the goal, which is to revive video tapes in 720x576 analog format years later, films that have also aged.
The conversion to digital means going from cassette to 13GB per hour originally to around 4GB with a bitrate of 7000kb/s. The playback quality, even back then, was average but innovative. You can see the progress between Video 8 and Hi8; DV improved even further.
I suggest one thing: the edges of the image often bleed a bit, so I apply a zoom crop with the editing software on the entire film to hide these fringes.
For the settings, there are no particularities; the format is MPEG2 720x576 (4:3) DVD compatible.

Remember to mark your message as "resolved" if that is the case.

Hello, if you have a video link instead of composite, a cord and a 5-pin plug in MPEG2 format 720x480 and a data rate pushed to 8GHz, there is a big difference.
Do not choose DV and I don't know how you manage to display 1920x1080 with MPEG 2.
I then pass my files onto my software for titling, cutting out any mistakes in the music, but especially the cropping in 3 minutes which greatly improves the rendering. Of course, you have to finalize the modified film always in the same format, same definition, same bitrate.
I don't know of any other way to transfer the content from magnetic tape cassettes than to go through your old camcorder, the Dazzle box, and the computer.
Send a cassette to a specialized lab for comparison, that's all I can see.
Thanks to sunmagellan for his very enlightening technical contribution.
I have the Dazzle driver for Windows 10 64 bits 1.08 installed for Studio 20.5 and an old DVC 107 box.

We are on the same page, it's the box that does the conversion, not the PC
A question for Jack who talks about Hi8 and Video8 tapes, does he have two camcorders, which has the best image
Watching live from a camcorder on a TV has no compression, as mentioned above, it's clearer from 13GB per hour we go to 4GB per hour after conversion, there are bound to be details that disappear with the algorithms of the codecs

In response to Glandu, since my first 8MM camcorder has died, I am using the same camcorder (Sony HI8 TRV-120E) to play the 8MM and HI8 tapes on the TV and also for transfer to Dazzle. Regarding the quality after passing through the box, the images are still almost unreadable and skip from time to time, despite changing the settings, replacing the composite cables with an S-video cable, and after downloading the software "PinnacleForDazzle_ESD.exe" provided by sunmagellan.
I can understand a slight loss of quality coming out of the Dazzle, but to this extent, it's surprising... but oh well, I tried.
The only option I have left is to find another player before my last camcorder dies that allows me to read my few 100 tapes filled with memories.
Thank you all for your help and collaboration.
Best regards,
Jack

Good evening,
I have the same problem with a Sony HI8 camcorder where the quality of the image after conversion is worse than mediocre. What I don't understand is that the Dazzle video recorder is sold for this application at a much higher price than simple systems that sell for around €20. It borders on misleading advertising for novice users. What should I buy to have equipment capable of performing a proper conversion in order to preserve all these memories?

Good evening,
Excuse me, I am new to the site and I don't know how it works at all. Even with good intentions, it will take me a bit of time to get on track. For your information, and if it is possible to respond here, my tapes are in excellent condition, and the output on the TV is perfect.
I tried to post my issue, but I'm not sure I did it correctly.

Here is an old PC model that would allow you to capture "otherwise" for €70

Especially if you still have your internal capture card (Studio DV)
or a contemporary one

Hello everyone, still at the bedside of our daring Jack. I suggested having these tapes converted by a professional; Fnac offers this service. Try it with 1 or 2 tapes, and if the result is satisfactory, it's the player that isn't performing well. I also have

Hello everyone, thank you for mentioning me in your discussions. I'm copying a message that I just sent to bring a solution to this mess.
Hello and welcome as a new member, you need a video8 format camera to transfer the footage with a capture device to your computer in mpeg2 file format.
We are now waiting to recommend a capture device that we trusted, but it seems to have compatibility issues with Windows. You can purchase it and return it if you encounter difficulties; it's the Dazzle device.

You also have USB keys with 4 wires like Terratec or "save these tapes"; make sure you can return them in case of failures.

I had the same issues as those mentioned (image jumps); I contacted Pinnacle support by email, who immediately responded by sending me the following message:
1. Quit Pinnacle Studio for Dazzle (or any other previous version you have installed).
2. With the Dazzle device connected, in Windows Explorer, right-click on This PC and click on Properties.
3. On the right, click on Device Manager.
4. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
5. Right-click on the Dazzle video capture device, Uninstall device.
6. In the dialog box, check the box "Delete the driver software for this device."
7. Repeat steps 5 to 6 for the Dazzle USB audio capture device.
8. Once done, unplug the Dazzle device.
9. Uninstall Pinnacle Studio for Dazzle.
10. Restart the PC.
11. Download the new Pinnacle Studio for Dazzle: https://www.pinnaclesys.com/fr/landing/download/
12. Plug in your Dazzle device.
13. Double-click on the downloaded installer. Run PinnacleDazzle_ESD.exe
14. Once finished, open the application, click on Import and check if you can capture.
NOTE: Make sure you are not using a USB HUB to connect your Dazzle hardware. The Dazzle hardware must be connected directly to the USB port of the PC.
I meticulously followed the procedure; the loading time of the new program is extremely long; however, upon relaunching the application, IT WORKS, without image jumps.

- Step 6 is important, to actively force the existing driver.

Unfortunately, I did not keep the internal card that went with the PC. But you gave me a good idea to set up a mini-tower with Windows 7 or XP and integrate a compatible acquisition card.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Good evening Jack196083,
I bought a Dazzle DVD Recorder HD 5 days ago, and like you, I have a video image that skips. I tried several camcorders (those from my family), and the problem persists. So, I tried changing the composite cables, but still nothing.
Did you find a solution, or did you return the package? I've spent a lot of time and energy for nothing, so I'm tempted to return the product.
By the way, a big thank you to GLANDU for sharing your knowledge.
Best regards.

Hello Nat. Have you tried the method proposed by COREL? And if so, what was the result? I'm just starting to use Studio for DAZZLE and I too find that the scanned image is unusable. Thank you.
Good evening Rochelais,
I tried to follow the procedure and after reinstalling the software, I launched Dazzle and an "error code 1011" appeared. And here we go again, I sent an email to Corel who gave me a new link from which I was able to reinstall the software. So after two and a half weeks, I managed to import a video from a camcorder... After a 3-minute capture attempt, I watched the sample and realized that there are "stripes" of slight parallel scratches on the recorded video.
In the end, I realize that I bought a product:
------ that does not work
------ I had to create a ticket for Corel's support service.
------ to get it to work, I was advised to make adjustments to adapt it to win10.
------ adjustments that created another problem.
------ I had to research forums to ask for help.
------ I realize that I am not the only one making this observation. GLANDU is here ☺️ thanks again for your help.
------ in the meantime, Corel sent me a link to reinstall Dazzle. RESULTS, new image problem...
Actually, when we receive the software, it is "outdated" and it is up to us to try to update it.
Well, since I had not exceeded the 30-day purchase period, I requested a refund, which I received in my account this Friday????.
However, I don't want to discourage you, still try but if you wrote to me it’s because you find yourself in the same situation as me and others.
The Dazzle DVD recorder was supposed to be a good product, it only leaves the brand image of "Dazzle".
Keep us updated.
Have a good day.

If you can do it, look for a PC with XP or find an old PC and install Win XP on it
And handle your installation with Dazzle and the video transfer with the software...
The problem is to get this system to work in the environment for which it was designed at the time... and it worked well... it hasn’t really been updated for new OS, especially Win 10... and adapting it would turn it into a real headache... To adapt to the routines imposed by Microsoft...
So, if you have the possibility, try with Windows XP... sorry for everyone else.

Hello everyone, thank you for mentioning me in your discussions. I am copying a message I just sent to find a solution to this mess.
Hello and welcome as a new member, you need a video8 format camera in order to transfer them with a capture device to your computer in mpeg2 file format.
We are now awaiting to advise you on a device that had our trust, but it turns out it has compatibility issues with Windows. You can buy it and return it in case of difficulties; it is the Dazzle device.

You also have USB keys with 4 pins, like Terratec or "save these tapes". Make sure you can return them in case of failures.

In fact, I had celebrated a little too early: when I tried to digitize my videos, the frame skip issue reappeared, perhaps at a lower rate but making the task impossible; I therefore contacted Corel support again, who responded immediately.
They suggested checking my computer configuration using WinAudit (http://www.parmavex.co.uk/winaudit.html) and consulting my MsInfo file.
I sent them these two files, and in return, they indicated that my computer was equipped with two graphics cards (NVIDIA and Intel), a configuration that could cause conflicts; they suggested using only one of the two cards by disabling the second.
I disabled the NVIDIA, as the Intel was necessary to use my second monitor.
As a result, everything works correctly, and I was able to digitize two tapes without frame skips.
Furthermore, at my request, they sent me a link to consult the specific user guide for Pinnacle Studio Dazzle software in English:
http://help.pinnaclesys.com/pinnacle/dazzle/en/help/index.html, as the guide does not exist in French, and the link to consult the user guide in French for Pinnacle Studio 23 on which Pinnacle Studio Dazzle is based: http://help.pinnaclesys.com/pinnacle/v23/fr/help/index.html, while indicating that only basic functions are available in the Dazzle version.
I would like to congratulate Corel support here for their responsiveness and valuable advice.

Hello everyone,
I have tested quite a few solutions since the early 2000s.
I have PCI analog TV cards with top-quality hardware mpg2 encoders, but they only work on XP with less than 4 GB of RAM. I have forced the RAM in Windows to 3.8 GB to avoid crashes, the equivalent in USB as well, but unfortunately, there’s a version that only works on XP, but that’s not a big deal.
I should try with VirtualBox to see, but I'm not sure everything will work.
I also have several Dazzle products, including the one discussed.
The important thing, as already mentioned, is the source. From my last batch of tapes, from 1985 to 2006, several have aged poorly, so it was time for me to intervene.
For VHS/VHS-C, I now use an "old" DVD burner/recorder/TNT player with HDD and HDMI output for monitoring on a recent flat-screen (small TV, PC monitor). You can find them second-hand for cheap; I have built up a stock of 4 or 5 units, Sony, Philips, etc. These machines have specialized circuits, and the quality is identical to the original VHS tape.
The hardest part is having a good VCR and a sturdy VHS-C adapter. On my last digitizations, I had 17 tapes, and I burnt out 2 adapters. I opened them up, and they were all plastic inside; the gears and parts get bent. You need to invest in something good, like JVC.
For 8 mm, it works the same, but using a camcorder with S-Video output is better.
The process:
Recording on the HDD of the recorder/player, by connecting the VCR or camcorder to the input, setting it to super HQ, 720x576. On a 250 GB HDD, I have over 25 hours of memory.
The bitrate obtained in mpg2 is 9300 kb/s, the audio is in ac3.
Basic editing/cutting of the rushes directly on the DVD/HDD recorder, to not exceed 4.4 GB per file on the DVD RW.
Copying the videos from the HDD to DVD RW (HQ speed) => RW burning allows you to reuse the DVD multiple times.
Copying the VOBs, etc. to a PC that still has a DVD reader.
Backing up the mpg2 sources on an external HDD/SSD for the future (when we have amazing algorithms for upscaling/cleaning videos, and to see the successor of h265, vp9?)
Encoding the "DVDs" to mp4 h264 with Handbrake, deinterlacing, etc., in Super HQ quality.
There are quite a few steps, but it's the best solution I’ve found in the end. The ultimate step would be to have a professional VCR that outputs a clean signal, without interference lines, but that costs an arm and a leg. I also have several VCRs, and the older ones are of better quality. With one of the latest, from 2007, I have signal incompatibilities between PAL/SECAM depending on the source inputs, even though they are identical, with echo, shaky video, and a kind of feedback; you have to remember to select the right input in the VCR menu. With an old Sony from 1999, everything is fine.
For DV => DV card, there’s no loss during export to AVI.
Now, the advantage of using USB capture peripherals on a PC is that we have powerful CPUs and SSDs that can handle the constant bitrate. Almost no dropped frames, and re-encoding of the final export is much faster (Ryzen recommended).

Hello, you are opening your message about an old exchange that may have gone unnoticed.
You have just made your purchase, very well, it's reliable equipment with a helpful online support.
My opinion: The image definition and data rate of these camcorders are technically outdated; there is a slight improvement with Hi8. I have experienced all these formats, and the conversion to MPEG2 will not add back the data lost due to compression. If there are fuzzy borders, you will need to crop and zoom a bit with the software.
What you see in the viewer is a lightweight file to facilitate editing.
As I specified in my messages, "the quality of the image can only be judged once the film is finalized in MPEG2
720X576 8000kb/s max."
You can always contact the supplier by sending a ticket describing these defects before returning the product.
