If this is in Writer, is this what you're trying to do?
If so, insert a table > 1 row/2 columns > Adjust the column widths
In the right column, type the special character (on Mac, it's alt⌥ + closing parenthesis).
Increase its size as desired and center vertically.
Table properties > Borders > Remove the borders.
I don't have a better suggestion.
