some CDs play very well and others do not.

    Hello.

    If it’s with CDs created by yourself, it’s possible that the codec format is not supported by your Hi-Fi system.
    If it’s with commercial CDs, check for any deep scratches on the recording side.

    Then you can clean the laser lens with 70° alcohol or, if not available, household alcohol using a lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning CDs; that’s a scam.

    It goes without saying that you should disconnect the device from the power supply before performing this cleaning.
