how to do **1 on Alcatel xl385. When you press the star key it locks or unlocks the handset, but the * sign never appears.

I don't know the model, but you can find more information here... https://www.alcatel-home.com/fr/documentation. For your model, there are 2 versions, with and without an answering machine.

It is a long press on the * (star) key that locks or unlocks the keys.
A brief press should yield the star (*)
