"Typing" icon no longer appears on messenger

Good evening,
I have been experiencing a problem with my Facebook account regarding the Messenger app for over a year now.
When a friend is writing me a message on Messenger, the icon of the little bubble with the three dots indicating that a message is being typed no longer appears at all.
This happens both on the browser on my Android phone and on my iPad.
This is the icon:
However, this only happens in conversations with one specific friend; in group conversations, I can see the icon appearing as soon as someone is typing.
Do you know how to resolve this strange issue?
