Best Friends badge on SnapChat disappeared!

Hello,
I have a very dear friend with whom I talk a lot on Snapchat. A week ago, he had some personal issues, and we talked little during that time, if at all, and now the best friends badge ???? has suddenly disappeared! I can't even find it next to his name or in his profile at the bottom next to the other badges, so I'm wondering if the app itself has reset the friendship scores and removed the smiley, or if he chose to hide it. I can't ask him this question; we just had a bit of a disagreement... So please, I would like to know if hiding the best friends badge means that the concerned contact will no longer be considered a best friend...? I'm a little lost.
