Hello,
for several days now, I have been unable to save my work. Every time I click on the save disk icon, the program freezes and nothing happens.
The performance of my PC increases from about 5GB to almost 15GB and then nothing.
I have to go into the applications and close AutoCAD.

I have 16GB of RAM, a 64-bit system, and Windows 7 Pro.

Thank you for your help as I am losing hope.
Best regards,
Georges

    Hello,

it could be due to a lot of things... you're not providing enough information that could indicate potential issues: version of AutoCAD to start with, file size, origin of the file (was it created by an Autodesk product?), is the problem widespread across all files or does it occur with just one file, amount of free space on your computer, etc.

Before detailing, start by checking your file and post the report here.

File > Drawing Utility > Check

    or on the keyboard CHECK

If AutoCAD detects any errors, make the corrections and then save your file to see if the problem persists.

I'm sorry, in the rush, I forgot the main point.

    AutoCad LT 2016
    file size 13463 KB
file created from several DXF files (at least 3)
the problem seems to reside only with this file.
I have 10463 MB of available memory
I have 10679 MB in cache memory
    free 55 MB
    Total 15967 MB

after a CHECK, I apparently have 0 affected objects

when I open my file, I use about 5.4 GB of memory, and as soon as I start a save, it goes up to the maximum and AutoCad freezes.

thank you very much for your time.
    best regards
    Georges

      re,
LT has a certain number of limitations that may explain problems with certain files. 13 MB can be large depending on the drawing: what is the size of the drawn object? How many objects and layers are in the drawing? Is your version of Windows 32 or 64 bits?

Make a copy of your file, purge it, and see if that improves the problem.

I'm going to try to respond as accurately as possible because I'm not sure I understood everything.
I only have one object, which is an industrial site.
The size of the object? Is it in MB or a metric size?
    There are 300 layers.
    There are 198 layers.
    I am on Windows 64-bit.

I regularly do "PURGE", nothing significant this time.

You tell me to make a copy.
    I did a "Save As".
The size of this new file is 7715 KB (half of the original!?!).
When I wanted to save it again, I got the message "Your computer's memory is insufficient. Save your files and close this program. AutoCAD LT".
In the meantime, I'm using 14.4 GB of memory, I only have 795 MB free, I'm struggling a bit.

    Did I answer your questions?

    Thank you, Georges.

      re,

You tell me to make a copy.
      I saved as.

It was to make a copy from the explorer to avoid manipulating the original file to prevent losing data in case of.

      There are 300 layers
      There are 198 layers

It's not clear: layers = layers (in English). In any case, 198 layers (even more if it's 300) must be starting to be a lot for LT.

A priori, there must be a problem with your file that requires too many resources to allow a normal save. The reasons can be numerous, but the first reflex is to purge the file to remove unnecessary elements. Then cleaning can be done manually, the idea being to limit the number of layers, line styles, text styles, dimension styles, to remove unnecessary objects, etc. You can also use the purge command that removes duplicate objects.

Then, if your file has an unknown or external origin (a BET, a surveyor, etc.), there may also be problems with unreferenced objects, objects from external applications (like Covadis), 3D elements, especially since LT cannot manage/remove such objects. In this case, there may be 2 complementary solutions (to be tested separately or one after the other):

      1. Zoom extents then select all objects by window selection (from left to right). Warning: do not use window selection (from right to left). Make a copy then paste everything into a new file.

      2. Export the file to DXF using the SAUVEDXF command by selecting objects and saving with an older version (v12 should be the oldest), which will keep only the main object definitions, then reload the DXF into AutoCAD and save it again as DWG.

      Good evening,
I'm back after having tried almost everything you suggested.
I even completely reinstalled AutoCAD. Nothing works.
After a save in *.DXF, everything is fine upon opening, but when saving even under a different name, it starts again.
The PC revs up and freezes, reaching maximum memory.

My skills in AutoCAD are quite limited; in my department, we mostly work with NX (formerly Unigraphics). I'm the only one using AutoCAD and for just one application.
Would it be possible for you to retrieve my file to see what might be wrong with it? And especially if it has the same effect on another system?

In any case, thank you very much for the time spent explaining things to me.
      Best regards,
      Georges

      Good evening,
you can send your file but I don't think it will help you since I don't use LT. And I believe the problem might come from there: as mentioned earlier, certain objects can cause issues with LT but not with AutoCAD. When a file bugs, the solution is to try to find the object(s) that are causing the problem; this can be (very) time-consuming when the file has a very large number of objects. You need to be methodical and meticulous, trying to isolate the objects one by one until you find what's not working.

    Hello,
I'm joining the conversation. Very good analysis from Alex and very clear. George, I'm on LT, so if you're interested, I can look into it even though I can't guarantee anything. Personally, at first glance, I would also lean towards the xref (probably very heavy) and therefore difficult to calculate.
You can contact me via PM.

    Hello Diname
Thank you for taking an interest in my question. I had complete trust in Alex, but if a second opinion confirms the first one, then there is certainly no doubt left.
I am more than willing to provide my file, especially since the need to work on it is becoming urgent.
Another person may have indeed made XREF-type modifications to my drawing, but I don't know any of these functions at all.
How can I know if there are any?
    How do I find them?
How can I intervene to delete them?
I don't know any of this.
I requested an AutoCAD refresher training!

    What does MP mean?
How do I find your contact details to transfer the file?
    Thanks again
    Georges

""MP" means private message. Click on my blue username and then on "write a message" at the top right.

Send me a download link via my private messaging. I will take a look and give you a summary accordingly. If it reassures you, I have been active on CCM since 2007 and I am also a contributor. :)"
