Move photos to a folder

Solved

Hello,
I have Windows 8.1 and I downloaded the Faststone image viewer software because with my 8.1 I cannot move my photos into the same folder.
You can do it with Faststone, but I don't know how to save my changes.
Similarly, when I return to my image folders, the new order has not been applied.
Thank you for your help.

Configuration: Windows / Chrome 68.0.3440.106

Hello,
In Fastone, once you have moved our images to arrange them in the order you prefer, you need to select all and go to Tools, Rename Images.
In the window that appears, towards the bottom right, there is a field to enter the new name, (Rename to..) followed by a separator point if needed and the character #. Then click Start and you're good to go.
To get some practice, try the procedure on a small folder with a few "dummy" photos.
If you enter the hash sign twice, the numbering will be in two digits, if you enter it three times, it will be in three digits, and so on...
It all depends on the total number of photos in your folder.
When you return to the explorer, you will notice that your photos remain in the desired order.
Best regards.

Hello Chocolat44
unfortunately, not everything goes as stated
everything is fine until - Rename to (I have 24 reclassified photos so I'm putting: portraits ##)
-start: I click yes on "are you sure you want to rename the files in the list"
-and then in the table: rename the image, in the information column there is: failure on all images
thank you for your help

Thank you very much for your help! Last night I struggled to save my photos that had been reorganized with this software, I was thinking of uninstalling the app and with your comment it worked in 2 clicks! Have a great evening!

Hello again to Man and hello to Georges97,
Phew !!!! finally the solution. It is true that I didn’t think about the software permission with BitDefender.
You learn something new every day.
I am happy for you, as Fastone is very handy for moving and renaming your photos.
To answer Georges97, yes, I do put a dot, for example: vacances.##
There is no space between the name and the dot, nor between the dot and the hashtag.
Have a nice end of the day.
Best regards.

Hello Ma'am,
Just to let you know, I have version 5.7 of Fastone which I only use for this function. I can't do anything else with it.
Everything works well for me. I just did a test this morning as follows:
So, once my photos are arranged in the desired order by moving them with the left click held down:
- left click on the first one, then Ctrl + A to select all
- Click on Tool then Rename selected images
- In the "Rename to" box, I write the new name followed by a period and the pound sign (2 for two-digit numbering)
Important, do not modify anything else
- Click on Start, Are you sure..... Click on Yes.
A new window appears with the sorted photos and the new name. That's it.
I closed Fastone, and I checked that my photo folder was indeed with the new name and in order.
I proceed this way, without any issues after grouping photos from different devices but having the same extension (recently on 900 photos). No problem.
You can find a detailed tutorial or user manual for this software online.
Good luck and best regards.

Hello Ma'am,
I am not a photography expert, nor an IT specialist, but I manage to get by.
However, I do not understand why you have an issue.
I don’t think the version has any impact. I have been using it since 2015, through a download with CCM.
I always work in the same way, as I mentioned in my previous message.
Can you ask someone close to you for help?
In the "Rename to" field, if there is already text, you need to erase it and only put the new name.
When you view your photos on your hard drive before making any modifications, do they all open without any problems? Is the extension correct to be accepted by Fastone?
I hope you find out the reason, as this software is very useful, since we cannot move photos under W10.
Thank you for keeping us updated. Best regards.

Hello chocolat44
Unfortunately not better
I even re-downloaded with CCM
my photos open without any problem
the extension is correct, my 19-year-old son doesn't understand either
just letting you know that I have Windows 8.1

Hello Ma'am,
I don’t know what to say. As for me, I am on W10.
Apparently, Fastone accepts W8; is it W8.1 that is causing the problem???
To clarify this mystery, maybe your son could download Fastone on his computer and see if it works?
I also saw, as a viewer suggestion, the free software XnView (check it out on CCM), but I haven't used it. It's worth considering.
I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.
However, depending on how your issue evolves, it would be interesting to know the outcome.
Best regards.

Hello,

Did you include a dot in the renaming of your photos? Your response raises some doubts:

"Rename to ( I have 24 reclassified photos, so I write: portraits ## " and not portraits.##

Best regards

Hello Chocolat44 and Georges97
my son downloaded the software on his PC (he has Windows 10) and it works, but before that, a notification popped up: BitDefender was asking to accept the software
we went back to my PC, no BitDefender notification
we went into my BitDefender and there we checked yes to accept
and finally it works
it was the pesky BitDefender that doesn't notify on Windows 8.1 that you need to accept
thank you very much to both of you for taking care of my problem
best regards Man
