Problem reading video files from external hard drive

Question

Hello,  I bought myself a new My Passport 3 TB external hard drive this week to replace a similar drive with lower capacity. I transferred all my video files to this drive: avi, mkv, etc. Both drives are in NTFS format, yet I can't see the files on my Samsung LCD 610 TV. The TV tells me that the drive contains no video files. Do you have any suggestions for solutions?

Televisions generally only read FAT32 systems, which is why your hard drive is not recognized! There is the guiformat software to format to FAT32, but you will not be able to put files larger than 4 GB on it.

Hello,  Probably not a formatting issue. The most common format is indeed NTFS now.  And your TV worked fine with an HDD in the same format.  The difference is the size. He talks about connecting the HDDs to USB 1 (HDD) The one at the bottom, from what I see, should be marked next to it. Have you tried with this one?  And no two USB devices at the same time, if possible.  After finding a solution, please remember to mark it as SOLVED. Reformat it then, but stay in NTFS. (It seems there are basic software on the drive, which might be an issue) And check if there is a simple way to update your TV.  And maybe there are too many files (since you're talking about 12 hours of transfer) Remove a good portion to see, and test. (before moving to a format)  (FAT32 is out of the question as you can't transfer a file larger than 4GB, so not great given the size of movies nowadays)  After finding a solution, remember to mark it as SOLVED. No specific software on this hard drive?  The Samsung support provides updates: Update the file (USB type) Version 1002.2 MAY 04, 2011 And Allshare Version 2.1.0.12031_10 FEB 02, 2012  With the versions, can you check on your TV if they are the same? -----------------------  It's not easy to cross-reference information to find the problem, or at least know if it’s supported or not.  Leave your hard drive connected to the TV. Unplug the TV from the power supply for 5 to 10 minutes (so it discharges well) Try playing a video again. If nothing improves: Do the same with the hard drive unplugged before cutting the power, and reconnect it afterwards.  ------------------------  Solutions here and there, as I don't really see a clear and precise issue. Different readings of other cases seem to indicate that some Samsung TVs have a hard time with hard drives. Haven't found anything precise for now. Good evening,  Without getting ahead of myself, I think it's the capacity of the HDD that's to blame; 3TB is too big for the TV.  I have a Seagate Expansion of 4TB in NTFS (almost full to within 40GB), it is not supported by my TV but it is by my Sony BDV-N7100 home theater system. Hello everyone and Merry Christmas! Thank you for your help: really! I will do some tests tomorrow to see if reading audio and photo files is possible. Model of the television: Samsung LN46C610N1F 2010 The update proposed by Samsung is installed. The disk has been formatted: the television detects it but not its content. Since both hard drives are of the same brand, the hypothesis of too high capacity seems plausible to me. I'll try the partitions and get back to you.

Good evening and Merry Christmas to you too ;-)  Here’s what I could find about this model:  Did you connect this HDD to USB 1 (HDD)?  I read a bit of the manual for this TV, and according to it, this USB port should support high-capacity HDDs, but what did Samsung mean by high capacity back in 2010???  Here is the excerpt that talks about it: Media Play only supports high-capacity memory USB devices (MSC). The MSC "Mass xxStorage Class" is a block-only high-capacity memory device. Examples of MSC include Thumb drives, Flash card readers, and USB HDD (USB HUB is not supported). Devices must be connected directly to the TV's USB port.  Back then, a 1 TB HDD might have been considered high capacity, if I'm not mistaken, we weren’t yet talking about 3 TB HDDs and more.  Regarding your question about the USB HUB, it is actually a multi-USB connector, it’s a USB power strip, and this type of connector is not recognized by your TV.   Since you have 2 HDDs, it is better to connect only one to the USB1 (HDD) port of the TV without using a multi-USB, it should work normally.
