Unable to recover a gmail password

Hello,
after some time away, I logged into my Gmail account (it's bookmarked so I don't have to type the password) but the account no longer recognizes me and asks for the password, which it invalidates.
not being very sure of the exact password anymore, I try to log in and follow the recovery procedure, but the final message from Google is: "we could not verify your identity"
it's annoying because it's my work account and I'm concerned about a potential hack of my email (I still have access to my YouTube account associated with it)
