Ethernet cable not plugged into virtual machine

Hello,

I recently installed a Windows XP virtual machine on VMware 12. I wanted to connect it to the local network via an Ethernet cable, but it's seen as unplugged, while my physical machine (which is running Windows 7) recognizes it as properly connected.

Do you have any ideas?

    what does a local network mean to you?
    the VM is connected to the host, that's all, depending on a certain configuration (host only, bridge, NAT ....)
    what did you choose?
    if I remember correctly, there's a checkbox to connect it in VMware too.

      For me, a local network is a network that is connected to a switch, router, box, and others.

      To be honest, I have no idea what has been chosen; I have the virtual network cards VMnet1 and 8 that are enabled.

      I just found out, I am on Bridged (Automatic). So in bridge mode. I just found the Virtual Machine Settings window, I've set it to NAT. The connection works with a chosen IP address but I can't connect to the Internet.

      Unless VmWare has an issue with your Windows 7.

      I've set the NAT. The connection works with a chosen IP address but I can't connect to the Internet.
      I could set an automatic IP address, but wouldn’t that cause problems for the network? (other computers are connected).

      No,
      the IP address will be provided by VMware, on a separate network, nothing to do with your original network.
      In bridge mode, it's as if it were a regular PC connected to your router, which will provide the IP address; to avoid any conflict, it's better for the VM to be set to automatic, if it works on the VMware side....
