Good evening everyone,
I have installed an NTP server on my server. When I try to update my client running XP from this machine, I get this message but I don't understand it ... so I don't know where to look:
Error synchronizing with server. The time sample was rejected because the peer's stratum is less than the host's stratum.
Such a message makes me think of a potential Samba OS LEVEL problem.... However, it seems foolish that it would be that: I didn't ask this XP idiot to request anything else from my server other than the time update...
Thanks in advance

Are you hesitating between Linux and Windows?
Do you want to spend time or money? :-D

Hello,
Here's what I found and after trying everything in vain, this worked:
There is also an error indicating that the RPC server is not available. Furthermore, you cannot start the Windows Clock service. The error will be as follows: "Could not start the Windows Clock service on the local computer Error 2: The specified file cannot be found."
1) Click Start/Run, then enter: cmd.
2) In the command prompt, type in and confirm each command by pressing Enter:
W32tm /unregister
W32tm /register
The first command unregisters the Windows Clock service and removes all configuration information stored in the Registry. The second does the exact opposite.
Don't forget to go to Administrative Tools > Services and start the "Windows Clock" or "Windows Time" service!
Once this first problem is resolved, I was able to notice that the synchronization did not observe the daylight saving time change. Here's a solution:
1) Click on the Time Zone tab then uncheck the box Adjust clock for automatic daylight saving time observation.
2) Click on the Internet Time tab then the Update button.
3) Select the Time Zone tab, and then check the box again.
And the synchronization works perfectly on all servers added by many of you... if the service is started which was not the case for me... after a reinstallation of Windows XP
Thank you... -
Hello, I have the same problem but as a noob*, I don't understand anything you’re saying :'(
I tried the cmd from Decameron but it says: "The following error occurred: Access denied. <0x80070005>" I'm supposed to be on the admin session :_O
I'm open to any help ^^
ps: I'm on XP Home Edition version 2002 service pack 2 -
Hello,
it probably has to do with the strata (stratum) of the NTP protocol.
The strata range from 1 to 15.
Stratum 1 synchronizes stratum 2, which synchronizes stratum 3, etc...
The client must therefore be of a higher stratum than the server.

Hi everyone, I would like if anyone could share the name of a time server for synchronization, thanks.
I have this problem:
when I try to synchronize, it says: an error occurred while reading the state of the last synchronization.
the RPC server is not available. -

Here,
this is all I found:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/docs/wintimeserv.doc
but,
if I understood correctly,
it's automatic:
your server synchronizes with one of the strat 2 time servers
for example:
http://www.cru.fr/NTP/serveurs_francais.html
and thus becomes strat 3.
the clients that synchronize with it will become strat 4...
and ... there you go! -
how do you set the time?
are you on a Windows domain?
if you're not on a domain, click on the time in the taskbar and go to the Internet Time tab.
and try with the level 2 servers from this list: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/262680/
