POSIX error when formatting a DDE on Mac

Hello,

I have just acquired a Gold Digital external hard drive, it is not recognized by my Mac except in Disk Utility.
When I try to format it, I always get the same error:

Unmounting the disk
Creating the partition map
POSIX reports: The operation could not be completed. Resource busy
The operation failed ...

If anyone has a solution?

Thank you in advance.

Configuration: Mac OS X (10.11.3) / Safari 9.0.3

Hello,

You don’t mention how you format your external hard drive, read this document to properly use the Disk Utility under your OS (El Capitan OS X 10.11)

https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/45227-utilitaire-de-disque-sous-os-x-10-11-et-versions-ulterieures

To format

When it’s urgent, it’s already too late (Talleyrand)

I use the "erase" button because the other buttons are grayed out. I am indeed using the Disk Utility on the Mac.

Click on "to format" from my previous message, which I added afterward.

So, from the Disk Utility, you select your external drive, the first line, then from the SOS menu you start a repair of this disk, to see if it's good, you follow the formatting procedure described in the help.

Which USB port do you plug it into? It's a USB 3.0 drive with no external power supply, just the USB connection?
And, which Mac are you connecting it to? You're not providing your configuration; that's a shame!

Hello,

hi dede :),

The partition scheme may be corrupted. Normally, under OS X 10.11, the SOS button, used after selecting the physically connected disks, should be able to fix the issue. But...

Otherwise, check KJK555's response here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2775040?tstart=0

good luck...

Have a nice day :-) - Francis

Hi Francis,

I did tell him to go through SOS, but it seems that it didn't work.

Yes, I saw that, that's why I gave the link.

Since OS X 10.11, there are 2 options to use SOS.

- After selecting the physical disk

- After selecting the disk partition. (or one of the partitions).

When selecting the physical disk to use SOS, it should verify the partition system and its scheme used. But it may fail, especially if the disk is under MBR scheme. This is where the link provides assistance... :)

Hello Francis,

I just followed the steps written by KJK555 and ... It's still not working:
Started erase on disk2
Error: -69759: Securely erasing data to prevent recovery failed
Underlying error: 16: POSIX reports: Resource busy

I want to clarify that in the Disk Utility, I only see the physical disk; there are no partitions displayed below as there are with the internal disk.

Thank you nonetheless for your help.

Here, I suspect a material defect. A communication issue between the Mac and the disk itself in its enclosure. It could be the electronic component specific to the external disk enclosure itself. Just to be sure: have you tested it with another cable?
