Hello,
I am reaching out to you because I recently ordered a MSI B85-G43 Gaming Motherboard and an Intel Core i5-6500 (3.2GHz) processor from LDLC, but it turns out that these two items are not compatible because the processor socket of the motherboard is LGA 1150, whereas the processor is LGA 1151. I therefore called LDLC to return my processor to order an i5-4690 (3.5GHz), but the advisor told me that it still wouldn't work because I would need to update the motherboard's BIOS. He suggested changing the motherboard, but I’m not keen on the one he proposed.
What would you do in my place?
Is it absolutely necessary to update the BIOS? And why?
How can you tell if a processor is compatible or not depending on the BIOS update?
Do you have a processor you would recommend?

Good evening, indeed the i5-6500 is a new processor featuring a new socket (1151) incompatible with the previous one (1150). The i5-4690 is just a "refreshed" version of the i5-4670 but still requires a BIOS update on motherboards other than those with H97 and Z97 chipsets that are more recent.
If you want a processor that works with your motherboard without an update, you need a non-refresh Haswell generation model, that is to say in the Core i5: the 4430, 4440, 4570 or 4670.
My friends think I'm a computer genius for always fixing their computers. Truthfully, I'm just really better at using Google than they are.-
If the motherboard is recent, a BIOS update would probably not be necessary. Here are the accepted CPUs and the corresponding BIOS version.
