Hello,

This is a 2013 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, activated and legal.
I don’t have a key; it is directly included in the Windows 7 installation DVD provided at the purchase. At 2 years old, the components are good for Windows 10; I did the compatibility test and everything is OK...

1) When launching the update via Windows Update, everything goes well: downloading, checking, installing, then restarting and getting stuck on a Windows icon in the center...

2) As seen in other threads, this could be an issue with component updates... I update my graphics card to the latest driver and check the rest, OK.
I restart the update under Windows... SAME BLOCK AT THE FIRST RESTART.
I’m getting angry and wait until the next day; in short, it’s been 3 or 4 days...

3) I try the update again using the Windows 10 installation tool "MediaCreationToolx64.exe" since I’m running 64-bit; the download completes at 100%, the updates check completes at 100%.
License accepted, then installation completes at 100%, then at the first restart of the PC: NOPE!!!

4) I use the MediaCreationToolx64 utility to create a bootable DVD...
I launch the DVD under Windows 7... I skip the update checks thinking it’s fine for later and SAME THING!!
Even booting first from the DVD gets stuck with the blue icon...
This update is driving me *crazy, but in fact, we are all *screwed!!!

Here is what I have:
"error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017: the installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during the BOOT operation"...

A recent PC... I don’t understand!! Do you have a solution, please?? Pleeease?? :'( Is it necessary to buy this damn Win 10 if I understand correctly... All this time spent on it, I’m so fed up!! I, who am usually patient... I’m waiting for your insights; thanks in advance...

Hello,
Windows 7 and 8 download the installation files for Windows 10 into a hidden folder located at the root of c:\ that starts with a $ and contains SafeOS in its name.
To delete it, right-click on c:\ in Computer, then Properties and Disk Cleanup. Choose to also delete system files, then check all the boxes and click OK.
Download CCleaner and in Cleaner, click Analyze and Clean and delete everything.
Then in c:\windows\softwaredistribution\, delete everything in Download and Datastore.

Hi Darlaive, thanks for the reply..
I'll look into that.. But after cleaning up the backup folders in c:/ and the manipulation you described, I'll try an update under Windows and it should work?

Normally, yes, it should work; all the update issues related to SafeOS that I know of have worked after making these changes.

Well, I tried cleaning the C:/ by deleting system files too, deleting the contents of the download and datastore folders, THEN cleaning with CCleaner two or even three times just to be sure... as you told me Darlaive
result = the same... stuck on the first restart of the PC supposedly to finish the installation of Windows 10, the blue Windows icon in the center stuck...

I’m stunned with a PC that is 2 years old!! 2 years!!!!... what do you advise me...... throw this PC away? or stay in limbo on Windows 7... well even if it works fine...
