I can’t hear anything from the left earphone and I’m in the car with several hours of drive ahead of me. I’ve been trying to get the left earphone to work for 20 minutes, and I don’t have a spare pair of earphones. What should I do?!

This is most likely a hardware issue. Apple earbuds are far from being the most reliable.
Check if your headphone jack (the one for the earbuds) is properly connected to your iPhone (fully inserted). If not, you'll need to buy a new pair of earbuds (all types are compatible, and you can find some for under €10). If after that, the newly purchased left earbud still doesn't work, then it's the phone's headphone jack that has a problem, and you'll have to deal with it.
