My Hard Drive (C:) is almost full

Hello,

I have a Packard Bell ixtreme M5740; Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz; Windows 7. I've had it for 4 years and it has always worked well.
It turns out I only have 9 GB left (out of 457 GB). And I realize that this number continues to decrease every time I turn on my PC.

Initially, I removed all my heavy video and music files, but it didn't change anything.

What can I do? What is filling up the hard drive like this? Is there any way to free up up to half of a hard drive?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

What primarily fills up the hard drive are updates, and you can also defragment your hard drive and remove games because games take up a lot of space, especially with the saved data.

I deleted all the games I had and all the heavy audio and video files. But the hard drive isn't clearing up.
So, I tried defragmentation, but strangely only the DATA drives (E:) and DATA (D:) can be defragmented. But the hard drive (C:) cannot be defragmented.

I'm at my wit's end, please need help.

Hi!
One solution (that frees up quite a bit) is to delete all your system restore points except for the last one. It's just your Windows that backs itself up at least with each Windows update and also with some software updates (like antivirus). It's explained here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US#1TC=windows-7.
Then there's also ccleaner that deletes your temporary files.
Also check if you have any viruses, with a full scan from your antivirus + one from an antimalware (like malwarebytes or adwcleaner).
Have a good evening!

Hello,

indeed, I have performed this operation several times; deleting all restore points except the last one. I only freed up 1 GB..

I avoid downloading new programs because I no longer have enough space.

I don't understand why, even though I have deleted large videos and audio files; eliminated all restore points except the last one, the disk is still full.

Hello everyone,

Allan, indeed the symptoms you're describing suggest a system restore, and you might want to consider deleting the system restore points (except for the last one, of course), as suggested by Gourlae.

I'm just stepping in to add a small detail. If you want to limit the space used for restore points to prevent this from happening again, take a look at this article that explains how: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US

Have a great day!

Hello, just to complete Daenerys_wd's response, it's Avast that sets the cursor at 50%, although recently Avast has corrected the issue.
Just to be sure, check like this:
Avast disconnect NG, if not already removed by Avast update
Control Panel
Programs and Features
Right-click on Avast
Modify
Change
Continue
Uncheck NG in the tools column
Continue
Restart

Thank you for your answers, however, deleting the restore points has not changed anything. I would like to free up to half of the hard drive. Is that possible?
I have browsed through the files in the Temp folder and I see that it is filled with very large files. Prefetch in Windows also seems to be filled with unnecessary large files.

Can I delete them?

Hi Allan,
Have you tried to:
Delete temporary internet files: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/view-and-delete-your-browsing-history-in-internet-explorer-098ffe52-5ac9-a449-c296-c735c32c8678
Delete files using the Disk Cleanup tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/tips-to-free-up-drive-space-on-your-pc-4d97fc4a-0175-8d49-ac2f-bcf27de46d34#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=windows-7
I strongly advise you to check if the computer might be infected.
Another option would be to check the health status of the HDD: https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/39851-disque-dur-etat-de-sante-et-garantie

Thank you Cristali,

I have Kaspersky; I don't have Avast.

A week of hassle! My hard drive space was decreasing without even using my computer. Total size of 232 GB reduced to 0 bytes free. Disk cleanup, deleting unused programs, files, etc... nothing worked. A deleted photo folder (not mine, luckily, but created to make a DVD for a friend) freed up 4 GB, but it was eaten up in 2 hours!! I even disabled System Restore, but unlike other similar cases I read about in various forums, it didn't free up a single byte on my hard drive. With the few MB briefly recovered, my computer was responding with more and more bizarre things and each time, I had to delete folders just to be able to connect to read my emails. I realized I was going to have to delete all my folders to go back to square one: free space 0 bytes!! Having renewed my Kaspersky Internet Security license a month ago, before I had Kaspersky Pure, I had the idea this morning to contact Kaspersky France technical support by phone at 0141398761. Problem solved in 1 minute!!! If you have the same problem and KIS installed on your computer, here is the miracle procedure to follow:
1) Open KIS
2) Click on Technical Support (at the bottom of the window)
3) Click on Support Tools
4) DISABLE EVENT LOGGING by clicking on the red box
5) Click on DELETE ALL SERVICE DATA AND REPORTS.

I recovered 168 GB!!!

Kaspersky protection works continuously, everything is recorded on the hard drive. (which explains why each time I freed up space, it was decreasing without even having used the computer)
In the future, I will activate event logging according to my requests and at the same time, I will delete service data and reports.
Kaspersky phone support is GREAT!!

I think that Kaspersky Internet Security should not be the only software storing all the data and reports on the hard drive. Given the 168 GB recovered, the storage space of these folders is huge!!
If you have another antivirus software, think about it!! And contact their technical support by phone; for me, the problem was solved in 1 minute!! AND ABOVE ALL, THE PROSPECT OF LOSING MY FILES FOR NOTHING IS CANCELLED!!

Hello Brighteyes75,

thank you for your input. I've also experienced some tough times. In the end, I had to restore my PC to its factory state.
I also use Kaspersky; I find it to be the best antivirus.

I checked the technical support, as you suggested, and event logging is turned off, and I make sure it stays that way—I don't want to go through those troubles again.

I have 456 GB on drive (C:), and right now, I'm only using 55 GB (401 GB free); it's better this way.

Good evening Allan, I don't know if the suggested manipulation got you out of trouble. It doesn't matter, but don't forget to DELETE ALL SERVICE DATA AND REPORTS, as mentioned earlier.

You can reactivate event logging as needed, as long as you disable + delete data and reports right after, if you don't want to see your free disk space vanish like snow in the sun.
