I don't understand why my connection is fluctuating.

Hello,

I have called SFR several times recently, and they have increased my connection to 16 Mbps, which is relatively fine. However, my connection is very unstable and sometimes drops from 12 Mbps to 1 Mbps! For your information, according to my advisor, I "cannot have 16 Mbps because my line is not suitable to receive 16 Mbps" (I live in a village, and "the terminal is not very far from my house" according to her).

There are several devices on my connection, an HD TV connected to my box, two computers via Wi-Fi, one or two mobile phones, and I am directly connected via Ethernet to my box (basically, two wired and three on Wi-Fi).

Could the problem come from my computer and malicious processes? Or does my connection have certain issues that can only be resolved by changing providers?

Thank you for your reply! (this has been going on for 3 months)

    Good evening,

Well, I am the only one complaining in my family because I play games that require a good connection (e.g. League of Legends).

However, the wifi network is also bad on my phone, so I really think it’s coming from the wifi connection. I thought that being wired would improve my connection, and it was better for, let's say, a month, but now it’s a disaster. The worst part is that at certain times it’s very good, and at other times it’s terrible.

I often run CCleaner and Malware scans, and they find nothing... And for the example of the HD TV, it was connected to the box (as it usually is) but no channel was on (the decoder was in standby, so turned off).

Good evening, this could be due to several issues.
Does the problem concern just one of your computers or all the wired and wifi-connected computers?
Is it an HD TV, meaning? Is it connected to the decoder, but are you watching HD channels or is the TV just HD and you are watching non-HD channels? (Watching HD channels "takes up" a good portion of the bandwidth, so it's best to avoid if you are limited).

Regarding changing operators, it is wise to determine where the problem is coming from first. Indeed, if the problem originates from your side, changing your ISP won't change anything; however, if the problem originates from SFR, then yes.

As for the possibility of viruses, that could be a reason, but that's also why I'm asking if the instability issue is coming from just one of your computers or if the problem is with all the computers.

    Best regards.

Hmm, we need to see how the connection is used with the rest of the family, because if they download, it uses it to the max.
Otherwise, check the drivers for your network card.

My parents hardly use their connection (sometimes a bit for downloads but it's rare and I know when they download ^^), and my brother just has Facebook open on his computer. He has a better connection via Wi-Fi but I'm on Ethernet.

Strangely, he just turned his computer off and my connection has become very good again... But whether it's on or off, he doesn't do anything on his computer!! Is that normal?

And if not, where can I download the drivers?

If his computer is infested, that could be a reason...

Ah, that's another problem... but it could be the cause, I will discuss it with him.
