Displaying non-printable characters (even with button click)

Hello,
On my office suite LIBRE OFFICE I can't seem to display non-printing characters that I always use when using this office suite. Even clicking on the "show/hide non-printing characters" button (the button that looks like a backward P with double legs) has no effect. I think the problem comes from my computer; I had the same issue with OPEN OFFICE; I must have uninstalled a program that I shouldn't have!
I don't think the problem comes from my computer, I have free AVAST, SPYBO; it used to work with it. I use CHROME and I have VISTA.
