Audacity refuses to record Solved

Question

Good evening,

My problem is as follows: I would like to record the sound from my PC with Audacity, but I can't manage to do it.

What I have already done:

- I am on Windows 7, so I went to "sound", then "recording", and I activated the Stereo Mix "Realtek High Definition Audio".

Like this:

- Then I opened Audacity. I went to "edit", then "preferences". In the "interface" tab, I set "Windows DirectSound". In the "Playback" tab, I set "Main Audio Device". In the "Recording" tab, I set "Stereo Mix (Realtek High Definition Audio)". And I confirmed.

Like this:

- I clicked on the "record" button. I started a YouTube video to test... and it doesn't work.

There's not even any sound being generated here:

Nothing happens AT ALL!

What I have tried:

- I watched a dozen tutorials on YouTube. They all suggest the same thing, and nothing ever happens.

- I read about a dozen articles. They all suggest the same thing, and nothing ever happens.

- I read about a dozen problem topics on help forums. NOBODY has the same issue. The only problem that people usually encounter is that they forgot to enable audio mixing, which is not my case, it is enabled!

- I updated the "Realtek High Definition Audio" driver.

- I restarted my PC twice.

- I tested every possible combination in the "playback" and "recording" tabs of Audacity. Nothing ever happens.

W H Y ? ! ! ! !!!

HOW DO I RECORD THE SOUND FROM MY PC ? ! H O W ?

It's nice... but I don't understand how this helps me, actually.

What's the connection between "lame" and stereo mixing????

Because it's not Audacity that's messing up, it's the stereo mixing if you read my post correctly. I'm talking about Audacity, but it's the same for other sound capture software; the stereo mixing doesn't work at all, even when activated, so "lame" or no "lame," it doesn't make a difference...

But thanks anyway. Does anyone have another solution?

in the menus you need:

As for Lame, it is used only to record in mp3 and nothing else ..............

uh I don't see the connection with lame either... it's just a codec for exporting to mp3....

Well, without wanting to depress you, I didn't know this Audacity trick, I just tried it randomly by activating stereo mix, and it worked the first time lol.

On the other hand, for me, in preferences, I don't have the option for "windows direct sound" for the host. I can only have "windows sound mapper", but I set "MME".

Then, there's no print screen, you need to make sure that to the right of the little microphone, under the vu-meters, you have "Stereo Mix".

Finally, as soon as we touch something, the vu-meter deactivates. You need to either click on the bars of the vu-meter or drop down the arrow and click on "visualize input" for the vu-meters to light up :)
EDIT: it's silly too, but you need to turn up the PC volume!!!

Even before trying in Audacity, it should be "moving" here, right?

Good point, the stereo mixing meter should move in Windows.  Your basic issue comes from there and not from Audacity.  But I'm not sure that's good news lol

Hear ye, hear ye, good people!

I come to bring you the good news, I have solved the problem.

I will therefore explain the solution to you, but also to the future martyr who may have the misfortune of encountering the same problem as me.

IF you have done exactly the same thing as me, but it still doesn’t work, it is probably due to the connection of your speakers. You need to plug them directly into your PC (for me, I plugged them into the headphone jack at the top of the tower, since anyway, there is already a headphone jack for most speakers, so...)

With the playback device connection having been modified, go to the speaker icon at the bottom right of your screen, in the taskbar. Right-click and select "Playback devices." If you play music for example, you will notice that the sound is no longer coming out. To signal to the computer the new device to use, right-click on it and select "Set as default device."

Note: in the Audio Mixing properties, under the "Listen" tab, do not check the box for "Listen to this device"!

There you go, it works for me. If it doesn’t work for you, well... all you have left is to pray :s
