Issue adding friends on PSN

Hello,
I bought a PS4 last December and I've tried to add friends on PSN twice now, but when I enter their ID in the mini search engine, it says no results... Could someone tell me if this problem is on my end or do my friends need to be online for me to add them?

Hi,

It's mainly important that your friends have a PS4, because if you want your PS3 buddies on PS4, it's not exactly possible; the only thing you get is the notification of your friends' connection.
