Good evening

I would like to access the pages google.com, google.be, google.it and I can't because I am automatically redirected to google.fr when I type the URL

What should I do?

Here is the solution below. I didn't know what to do with my umpteenth insomniac episode... So I decided to take a world tour of Google!

The easiest way is to add /ncr (for No Country Redirect) at the end of the domain. For example:

Go to Google US: https://www.google.com/
Go to Google Germany: https://www.google.de/
Go to Google Belgium: https://www.google.be/
Go to Google Canada: https://www.google.ca/
Go to Google Spain: https://www.google.es/
Go to Google Italy: https://www.google.it/

Alternatively, by adding ?hl=code_lang at the end:

(Just a note, for this one you need 2 because this country is divided by the native languages Walloon/Flemish)

(Except for the url that changes, in my opinion we should get the same results as on the Flemish Belgian Google, it should be the main site for the Flemish; when typing google.be they should actually end up on this site with a nice .be extension)

I had forgotten about this post but I'm coming back to it after the question crossed my mind once again :) and after some tests there are some things I find strange...

1) I can't access Google.cn (China) as I'm redirected to google.com in English (it's funny how when you want it you can't have it and when you don't want it... well, you get it!) and yet it doesn't seem to be a language module issue since it would ask for installation I think

2) You can't set google.us or google.com (in English) as your homepage unless you first go through google in English, copy/paste it into internet options and not delete cookies (so it's because of cookies)

3) And finally, what surprised me the most, when I type the word FRANCE on Google.com in English (so google USA) I get 949,000,000 results, and with google France 779,000,000 so far so good. Now if I take a "controversial" word like NAZI I get 29,600,000 results on Google.com in English and on google France 31,100,000 and there I think it's less normal because certainly France was occupied but still we should find more results with the American google for two reasons:
- the American population is 300 million while ours is 60 million (so fewer internet connections and fewer pages viewed and created especially compared to the USA)
- and especially the legislation in the USA regarding freedom of expression gives total freedom to racist sites (first amendment) unlike France which censors them. In conclusion, there should be more results for google USA, right??

So I'm asking myself questions, is Google.com in English really the USA google (I have serious doubts)? Is it automatically censored in its results in line with French legislation or the country where you are, even if they are just search results (it could display the results without allowing access to the sites, which seems to be the responsibility of ISPs)? In that case, it's not up to par if we find more results in .fr than in .com :$

There you go, now my fingers hurt but these questions seem important to me so if anyone has answers I would be interested in knowing them. Thanks for reading until the end and I hope I was clear enough ;)

I'm not a sage and even less a mathematician, plus my French is very rudimentary. My apologies for the mistakes I might make; I'm just a small Belgian (Flemish).

It seems to me that there is a simpler and more Cartesian explanation for question 3 that you posed.
When you search for something on Google, you get all the sites that the search system finds on the entire World Wide Web.
The only thing that changes is the order. This means that when you search for a word on google.com, google.be, google.fr, ... you get "almost" the same number of results. Google gives you the site that is most consulted in your country or region first. More precisely, the site that is considered the most effective in responding to your question/search. For this order, they use a very complicated search program (algorithm) that few people know the true 'mode of operation' of, as it's exactly the 'core' of their 'business' and one of the secrets of their great success. But I still know that if you want your site to rank higher on GOOGLE, you need to have as many links as possible. Links that direct people to your site are one (of the many) indicators for Google’s program that your site is popular or the 'right' answer to the 'searched' word. When you have a site, list it on sites like www.quefaire.be or www.fra.cityvox.fr... it yields good results :-)

The small statistical difference that exists between the numbers you obtain on different Google sites is, in my opinion, explained by the fact that Google tries to give the most effective results for searchers from a certain country (.fr, .be,.com, .il,...) or the sites that are relevant for the searchers. This also means, or even especially, the sites that link you to another site that provides information on the subject or sites that contain information that is relevant to many researchers in that region like wikipedio.org or fr.wikipedia.org or ja.wikipedia.org. This means that, somewhat contrary to what I said before, the numbers obtained can differ. When you search for a word on google.fr, you won't find the results you would get on nl.wikipedia.be or ja.wikipedia.be, which are in Dutch or Japanese, because the French who searched a word didn’t find those results useful for their search (according to the algorithms that Google uses, of course). So normally, you would get more results on google.com because there are more searchers from different cultures and native languages, more reference sites, more information sites, more sites that are considered relevant by more users,... and last but not least, the search system on google.com is undoubtedly more developed and refined than the adaptations in other languages. When you search for example for the words 'Léo Ferré' (a 'search word' that doesn't cause translation issues and is undoubtedly consulted more in France than elsewhere but might also be contentious;-) you get 184,000 results in Israel, 163,000 results in Belgium (Flemish, which is the same as Dutch), 162,000 in France, and 1,440,000 in the USA. On google.com, you find sites like www.avoo.com/wiki/Léo_Ferré ripatlas.com/Léo_Ferré that you don’t find on google.fr. This doesn’t mean that these results aren’t accessible in France, but that they are not relevant enough for the searchers. When you put in the words leo+ferré+ripatlas, you get these sites as the most relevant.

I think what I've written is certainly not the whole truth, but I believe I'm fairly close.
I'm not saying there aren't censorship mechanisms on Google; on the contrary!!! The selection mechanism even censors the results, like in the rest of the free market, it’s those with capital who benefit. If you want to know more about the censorship mechanisms and Google’s 'ranking' that is very favorable to commercial sites, you can find a lot of interesting information at http://www.google-watch.org/
