Reduce the size of a .3gp video.

Good evening everyone.

I have a video clip encoded in .3gp format so that my phone (LG K800 also called "chocolate") can play it, anyway. The problem is that this video is almost 9950 KB, and the size is not supported by my phone. I would like to know how to reduce the size of this video, even if the quality will be lower (I just want it to be minimally visible lol), or even cut it into several parts if reducing its size is impossible. Is there a software for that, or something else? But it should be free.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

Good evening,
I can't guarantee that it will work, but I have a lead. Try using Windows Movie Maker; you can even choose the final size you want for your video. The only problem is that I don't know if it supports the .3gp format. So, you just have to give it a try.
If it doesn't support it, you can convert it to .avi, then reduce the size and convert it back to .3gp. It's a bit tedious, I concede, but for now, I don't have anything better.
Hoping this helps you.

Hi and thank you for your very clear response.
I've been able to convert my file to .avi, so that's done. However, even though I have Windows, Office, etc., I can't find Movie Maker, which is strange... Is there a small free program that would allow me to reduce the file size?

I have exactly the same problem and am eagerly awaiting your solutions....

I am having trouble replying to you, there may be some duplicates. I was saying I would opt for the second solution since I don't have Movie Maker. I wanted to know how to do it: Can I just do a save as and rename it to .avi? And how do I lighten it as you mentioned? With a right-click of the mouse? Or is there software? Are there any free ones available? Thank you.

Hi Pépitas,
Actually, my solution only works if you have Windows Movie Maker (which you should have in principle, unless you're on Mac or Linux). Could a friend of yours help you out with that?
You actually need to convert your .3gp file to .avi; unfortunately, a save as isn't enough, it could damage your file. You can do this with Media Encoder or VirtualDub, both of which are free. Once you have the .avi, you reduce its size with Windows Movie Maker (if you have Windows, make sure to check all your programs, you should have it). Once you've reduced the size, you convert your file back to .3gp.
I hope I was clear, and I really hope it works.
Good luck.

Hi Pépitas,
Sorry for the late reply, but sometimes personal life comes before the computer ;o)
Anyway, if you have Windows, it means you have Movie Maker, but it might just be hidden. Go to your computer and run a search; you should definitely find it. You might need to install or reinstall it, but you should be able to locate it.
If that’s not the case (which I doubt) or if you don't want to go through that, Media Encoder and VirtualDub also do video size reduction. However, for Media Encoder (I haven't checked if it's the same on VirtualDub), you can't choose the final size you want...
There you go, we're probably close to solving your problem, keep me updated.
Bye.

Hi and thanks for your response
So I did indeed find movie maker.....alallaal
So I have an .exe that if I run, the program opens...I find that strange because it seemed to me that .exe files are used to install a program but apparently I have to click on this .exe every time....ugh
I copied it from my program files and pasted it on my desktop instead of creating a shortcut. So it’s on my desktop and if I want to delete it, the computer tells me that the program will no longer work if I delete it, yet it's just a copy....
This just adds a problem to my problem :(
Well, now that I have movie maker, what do I do?

For your info, I uploaded another photo on the forum where the first one didn’t work, 3x heavier than the first one and it can be read, so apparently weight wasn’t the problem factor. That doesn’t change the fact that I really want to know how to make it work....we'll get there, we have to persevere hehe.

I have these songs that I would like to send to my friends, but they are always too large.
If someone can tell me how to do this, please explain to me, then join me.

Hello Pépitas,
So, beginning of victory, you have Movie Maker (let's overlook its strange behavior with its .exe).
Once Movie Maker is open, on the left, you have the different steps. Go to the first step and click on "Import video," it will prompt you to browse and select your video. Once it has imported it into Movie Maker, it will appear at the top center and you can drag it into what looks like the "timeline" at the bottom left. You can go directly to the third step (still on the left) if you have no modifications to make and click on "Export to my computer."
There you will have either 1 choice or 3 choices; if you only have one choice, just click below on "Show more choices," and you will have the 3 choices. Check the box for the second choice (I don't remember its exact name) and you will see that a box will become active where you can specify the size you want in Ko or Mo (up to 1324 Mo maximum if I remember correctly).

There you go, it smells like the end of the adventure, the problem is close to being solved.

Byebye.

Wow, indeed we have made great progress and it's thanks to your patience... thank you very much, I understood all your explanations. However, I still have 2-3 little questions.....
Is it normal that even if I open a .avi file, once saved, it saves as a .wmv?
I imported a video into Movie Maker, but when it appears, it shows up as 7 files named 001, 002, 003, etc...
So, regarding my problem with the first video, I don't think it has anything to do with the size, since it weighs 914 KB, so that's pretty light, right? 1000 KB = 1 MB, that's correct?
That's all my endless questions...

Good evening Pepitas,
Is it normal that even if I open a .avi file, once saved it ends up being saved as .wmv?
I think you mean, is it normal that when importing a video in *.avi, once exported, it is in *.wmv? Well, it all depends on the export format you choose. WMM is "specialized" in wmv, but there is still an encoding option available in *.avi (always more choices...) set by default.
I imported a video into Movie Maker, so when it appears, it shows up as 7 files named 001, 002, 003, etc...
Indeed, when you import a video into WMM, there is a default option checked at the bottom left that systematically splits your file into smaller pieces. You just need to uncheck it to import it as a single piece...
And yes, 1000ko = 1Mo
There you go!
:)

So I'm not sure if I have the right version (2.1) because I can't find any of these 2 options. When I click on "more choices," I can't change to .avi and I also don’t see the checkbox in the lower left corner, strange...

Good evening Pepitas,
Version 2.1 seems a bit old to me...
In the SP2 for XP (you're on XP, right?), you'll have a more recent version... at least 5.1
Otherwise, when you import the video, there will be at the bottom: import options: create clips for the video file, and for exporting the video: more choices, other settings, DV-AVI (PAL), and there you go...

pepitas

Yes, sorry, it's marked version 5.1 but below it says 2.1.4036.0, so it's the right one...
So indeed there is this tab: create clips for the video file, so I unchecked it, is that right?
However, I don't see what you're talking about when you mention exporting, I understood that I should click on "save on my computer," and there I can't find anything... blonde moment when it comes to us :)

Excuse me, Pepitas,
it's me who talked about export (a reflex)...
So yes, it's indeed this option that you need to uncheck if you don't want it to automatically create video clips...
And for the "export":
> save the video file (or ctrl+P)
> workstation
> there, we choose the name and the location
> more options
> other settings
> DV-AVI (PAL) [or any other option for that matter, it's up to you to choose!]
There you go!!

so apparently the problem is here, I choose my location and then
1) Enter a file name for the recorded video
2) Choose a location to save the video
I can't do anything else besides next and then it's the end...
0
starbeuck Posted messages 293 Status Membre 90

1) Enter a file name for the recorded video
2) Choose a location to save the video

> press next at the bottom:
> a new page appears, at the top:
> a circle with a black dot inside, and "optimal quality for playback on my computer (recommended)
> below, highlighted in blue: "show more choices":
> the third option: other settings
> a dropdown menu: and you choose...
does that work?

pepitas

Oh no, I had opened that dropdown menu, but I didn't notice. So I have to choose dv-avi (pal)?
Wow, what patience you have, thank you 10,000 times.

Hi Pepitas,
yes, that's right, you choose the DV-AVI format.
However, you should know that it's a good video format (quality) but a bit heavy nonetheless.
But it will be in *.avi, and it should be readable everywhere (even on Macs) normally.
There you go!
Have a nice day :)

Hi, I'm back :)
I just wanted to check if with Movie Maker we could shorten videos? I made a very short video and I'd like to cut out the last 3 seconds....

Hello Pepitas,
so, yes, it’s possible, in fact, that’s the basis of video editing!!

Movie Maker is organized as follows:
> on the left, the video tasks menu (which you can also find more simply in the normal menus...)
> in the middle, the video "collections," basically, the imported and processed videos
> at the bottom, the timeline, for editing
> and on the right, the video viewer

When you select a video in the collections (in the middle, that is), it displays in the viewer on the right.

On this viewer, there is a bar of buttons, from left to right,
play
stop
rewind
previous frame
next frame

fast forward
split the clip into two clips at the current frame
take a photo

to cut your video, you use play, stop, or directly the slider,
for more accuracy, you can use previous frame or next frame,
then you split,
this will create a new clip, with the same name as the one you just cut, with a number (1, then 2, etc.) in parentheses, which will go into the collections (in the middle),
the original clip is the one you cut (from start to cut),
the new clip is the remainder (from cut to end),
then, you just need to place the selected piece or pieces on the timeline (at the bottom)

In this case, you will just have to cut three seconds before the end, and place the original (cut) on the timeline...
then, you already know what to do!!
Happy editing!
:-)

I'm going to try :) well my tiny little file weighed 350 KB, I did what you said and cut the last 2 seconds, out of the 6 seconds the mini film lasted, I saved it, etc... and now it weighs 11,000 KB, like it's just huge, way too heavy now... yet I followed the great instructions to the letter :) ughhhh

starbeuck Posted messages 293 Status Membre 90

Hello Pepitas,
so two questions:
1) where does your original file of 350 kb come from? Is it a video you made with WMM that you have already edited, or was it modified later, or is it from somewhere else?
2) when you "saved" your movie, what format did you choose? The DV-AVI (Pal) or another one?
Let me know, I'll tell you!!
In any case, I will try!
:-)

So it's an original file made with my Nokia in .3gp. And yes, I saved it as .avi with Movie Maker.

starbeuck Posted messages 293 Status Membre 90

So normally,
by going back to this step, you save in DV-AVI (Pal) if you want to stay in *.avi,
or you choose a *.wmv which is much lighter, there’s even an option for (more choices> second choice> adjust to file size).
Normally, even in *.avi, it cannot be heavier than the original.
If that’s still not enough, you can use MediaCoder to compress it even further...

in bold, the only *.avi format offered by WMM...
However, this is the drop-down menu for the third option...

Dear Pepitas, let's start over from the beginning!!
Menu,
Save video,
next,
computer,
next,
1, enter a file name for the saved video,
2, choose a location to save the video,
next,
optimal quality for playback on my computer (recommended),
below: show more choices,
we end up with additionally:
> adjust to file size, and there, you enter the video size that seems ideal to you, but it will be in *.wmv,
> other settings, and there, you will have the drop-down menu that you copied-pasted, in which you choose DV-AVI (PAL)

If in the end, neither of these two solutions suits you, you can transcode it with MediaCoder
