Hello everyone!

Big problem with a friend's PC who has a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

She used to have the "Starter" version of Office 2010, which included only Word and Excel, and then decided to buy the Home and Student version of Office 2013 in a store, which includes: Word, Excel, OneNote, and PowerPoint.

So, version 2013.

After the installation, right away Word and Excel didn't work. When we open them, we get the page that shows the different types of templates, and as soon as we click on one of them, it tries to load, then almost immediately announces:

"Excel (or Word, by the way) has encountered a problem and must close" and there's nothing we can do but close it.

Of course, I spent hours trying everything, uninstalling, uninstalling the 2010 Starter version, repairing... In short, I consulted a ton of forums and none gave me the solution. EXCEPT ONE, which worked (partially).

They said to start the program in "Safe Mode" (by typing winword.exe /safe or excel.exe /safe in "Run"), and to uninstall the add-ins.

I did this for Word, removing the ABBYY *whatever* add-on and BINGO! Word worked and is functioning properly today.

I tried the same thing with Excel, but there are no add-ins. So nothing to disable... still stuck.

I read elsewhere that the problem was due to the graphics accelerator and that it needed to be disabled in the Excel settings, but in "Safe" mode, I don't have access to that part of the settings. It's greyed out, and in "normal" mode, as soon as I open the options, same thing: "Excel has encountered... etc."

Anyway, I then read that disabling the graphics card drivers, starting Excel, and unchecking the "Graphics Accelerator..." box was sufficient. But even when disabling the graphics drivers: "Excel has encountered...."

I then tried to start Excel in "256 colors," in "XP Home" mode, or all the other combined modes... but nothing works. If I boot the PC in safe mode, Word and Excel don't launch at all.

Since the beginning, PowerPoint has been running smoothly without asking anyone anything and works perfectly...

So Word is resolved, but EXCEL???

What to do? Thank you for your help!

Cyril

    Hello,

You can try to launch Excel in safe mode using a shortcut with the /s switch.
Just in case it lets you access the options.
    See here: https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/office/commutateurs-de-ligne-de-commande-pour-les-produits-microsoft-office-079164cd-4ef5-4178-b235-441737deb3a6?ocmsassetid=ha102919739&ctt=1&correlationid=47950baf-30c0-4ee1-94c2-7b7ff7cee5d2&ui=fr-fr&rs=fr-fr&ad=fr

This 2013 version looks terrible judging by everything we see here :-s

    Well, that's done.

Thank you eriiic for your response. As mentioned above, I've already done that. Excel works in this mode. But it's impossible to access the desired settings as they are grayed out...
