Connecting a self-powered external hard drive to a tablet

Hello,

I was about to buy the Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet, which meets my needs (movies, emails, office work, knowing that I travel a lot), but I learned that I couldn't read self-powered external hard drives directly on the tablet.
This is very inconvenient for me.

Is there an equivalent tablet to the Galaxy S2 that can also read external hard drives?
In general, are there tablets that can read self-powered external hard drives directly?

Thank you!

Guillaume

Good evening Eldudi40,
Yes, it is possible to connect an external hard drive to a tablet.
Two conditions:
- If the drive is NTFS, the tablet must be rooted and software like Paragon must be installed to recognize the partitions.
- The USB hard drive must be powered by a second USB port, which is a challenge since the tablet only has one port. The solution is to use a powered USB hub with 5 volts.
But don't expect miracles; due to the slowness of the USB connection, a HD video will not work or will be very choppy or even unreadable depending on the player used.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and I found a great product called the A-USBKey GT, which is a USB stick with two male connectors, one side has a USB connector and the other side has a connector for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. I have a 64 Gb one, and I can really store a lot of movies on it; I use it a bit like an external hard drive, since tablets only accept 32Gb SD cards. I'm putting the link where I found it:

Have a good evening.

Hello Fanasam!

I have gone through dozens of forums on this topic, and your comment is the first that gets close to answering my question. So you give me hope, and I hope you can guide me :)

Here’s the problem I am facing:
I am going to travel for a year by bike. I will take my phone, digital camera, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet, SanDisk Cruzer Switch 32GB USB stick, and Toshiba Store Basics 1TB external hard drive in my panniers. I chose this tablet so I can communicate if needed with the outside world, but also and especially to transfer my photos from my SD card to my external hard drive. It seemed to me that the salesperson at the store who advised me said it was possible, but I probably misunderstood or mistook my dreams for reality. Because I just received my tablet, and I’m about to buy a micro USB / USB adapter to connect the two together. But after reading the forums, it seems that it is impossible to connect a self-powered external hard drive to a tablet like my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. But you are the first one who seems to indicate otherwise!

Here is the configuration I hope to set up:
- Insert the SD card from my camera into the SD slot of my Samsung tablet to read my photos
- Connect my Toshiba external hard drive to the micro USB port of my tablet via the micro USB/USB adapter, so I can transfer my photos.
- Power my Toshiba external hard drive with a power bank like this one (https://www.lecyclo.com/velo/pieces-detachees/piles-energie/pile-batterie-aimant/batterie-tampon-pour-chargeur-e-werk.html which delivers a continuous voltage of 5V, through the second USB cable of my external hard drive.

My question:
- Is it possible to power the Toshiba hard drive with my power bank on one side while transferring data from my Samsung tablet on the other?
- If so, are there any risks of damaging my hard drive in any way?
- I expect the transfer rate to be very slow between the two, but if it's possible, that's already great.
- If not, do you have another idea to make my setup viable?

Thank you in advance for your advice - and sorry for this long message. The Galaxy Note 8 tablet fits exactly what I need overall, but this connectivity issue with my external hard drive is bothersome, so if necessary, I will change tablets for something more suitable.

Hello,

I bought a Tab S but I can't connect my external hard drive to it.
You say that if the external hard drive is in NTFS format, I need to root the tablet. What if we directly change the format of the hard drive by formatting it to FAT32?
Thank you for your help!

I have a hard drive formatted in FAT32, there are no issues reading the files it contains when I connect it to my Samsung Tab S (note that the hard drive must be powered).

Hello
I have a Galaxy TAB S2 64 and a 128 micro SD.
On an external SSD 1TB, I have movies and videos that I would like to transfer to the tablet; is this really possible???
Thank you in advance.
