Sorting and Merged Cell Issues

To split them, but at your own risk because we don't know if you'll get a correct display
Select the entire field to filter or, if necessary, the whole sheet by clicking on the small box to the left of the column titles
Right click/ Cell format / alignment /
and uncheck: merge cells (or leave the checkbox empty as it might be grayed out instead of checked)

Yes, this way merged cells become visible, but I think it's better to identify the merged cells first, then center them across multiple columns via: Format, Cell, Alignment, horizontal, center...
