Problem with the "z" key that is acting weirdly

Hello everyone,

well, I have a strange problem with the "z" key. When I press it, it outputs something weird: "z²x&tn(v$s" and it launches Windows Media Player, takes a screenshot, and opens a new Firefox page instead of the one I'm working on (yes, all at the same time!!!). In fact, to type this "z" without all these things happening, I have to press the "²" key at the same time (and then delete the "²")!!!

It seems like it's triggering shortcuts or functions or something... it happened to me this morning after my PC had been left on all night (as always). I can suspect my cat of having laid its fat on my keyboard and pressed several keys at once, but that doesn't help me much...! I've done plenty of Google searches of course, with no results.

If anyone has an idea, that would be super cool, because I find it silly to change the keyboard for such a small issue, knowing that it may not solve my problem since I attempted to reset my keyboard without it resolving. I also unplugged and replugged it, with no results either.

Thank you very much!!!

ps: I'm on Vista, HP keyboard, desktop PC.
pps: I should add that I've run Malwarebytes, Spybot, and Roguekiller, with no effect.

Hello,

I also suspect your cat of this crime.
I've experienced the same thing several times, meaning crazy keys like your Z key, because my cat had laid down on it without my consent.

Check that the Z key isn't stuck or weirdly blocked, pop it out and put it back, it's just a keyboard issue, nothing to do with the PC itself.
For me, the problem has always fixed itself.

At worst, replace the keyboard (?) It's a bit silly to say, but it doesn't cost much these days.

Well, well, well !!!!!!
So here it is, just now my Z key is working normally again, but I didn't do anything special for that. It came back "by itself"... So if anyone has encountered this issue or knows what caused it, I'd really like to understand!

Thank you

Yep

I had removed and cleaned the key; it wasn't coming from there.

My cat is going to face court-martial, but without a sufficiently substantial case against him, I'm afraid he might get off lightly.

I fear this mystery will remain opaque...

Thank you for your participation Rhoeas
