Sometimes it is not possible to uninstall Avast! through the standard way - using "ADD or REMOVE programs" in the control panel. In this case, you can still use our uninstallation utility aswClear.

Warning: since the introduction of the Avast! self-protection system (version 4.8 and later), it is no longer possible to use aswClear without disabling the Avast! self-protection system. This can be done in the "Program settings," under "Troubleshooting" – check the option "Disable Avast! self-defense module."

How to uninstall our software using aswClear.exe:

1. Download aswClear.exe to your desktop
2. Disable the Avast! self-protection system or restart Windows in Safe Mode
3. Run the downloaded utility
4. If you installed Avast in a different folder than the default one, locate it by browsing your disk with the "..." button. (Note: Be careful! The contents of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
5. Click on "Uninstall"
6. Restart your computer

I also struggled quite a bit to remove Avast on my XP.
I also tried using aswclear.exe, disabling the resident protection and everything that is recommended for uninstallation, but it not only didn't work, it also crashed.
So, I tried to remove it with Revo Uninstaller, an uninstallation software, free, that allows for deep uninstallation (there are several modes, I used the "moderate" mode set by default, but in case of difficulty, there is also the "advanced" mode which uninstalls even more deeply) and this time it worked.
I think CCleaner can also be quite suitable with its uninstallation tool. Otherwise, downloading Revo Uninstaller works for everything by the way and cleans the pc better than the Windows tool.
Good luck to everyone and the lesson to remember is to install antivirus.

Sorry to bump this forum but I have a big issue!
I want to uninstall Avast because it seems I caught a virus that it doesn't recognize! :S
I have downloaded the software from the publisher, but I can't start the process because a message from Avast pops up on the screen asking me to confirm!
The problem is that when this message appears, neither my mouse nor my touchpad (laptop) are usable!!! Same goes for the keyboard!
Is there an option to uncheck somewhere?

  What a hassle! I wasn't able to uninstall AVAST through the uninstall program in the Windows Control Panel NOR ON THE AVAST WEBSITE with their uninstallation program because AVAST's self-defense was impossible to disable (in Settings, Troubleshooting of Avast). So I did as KENWOOD said with one difference. Once in safe mode (F8), instead of running the program that Kenwood recommends, I opened the Control Panel again, clicked on Avast uninstall, and it worked very quickly!! Phew, no more Avast and my computer runs like new. It took me three hours to get rid of Avast Internet Security (paid version, no less) that wasn't working anymore and was blocking my computer...
