Hello everyone.
I've had a problem since yesterday; when I want to copy several folders from one computer
to another, I always use an external hard drive of 500GB or 1TB from Western
Digital. I copied several folders from my computer yesterday afternoon to put on my
laptop. But then, barely a minute after starting, the external hard drive
seems to disconnect and I get error message 0x80070037 the source is no longer
available. I don't know why, but Windows seems to be disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, which of course cancels the ongoing transfer. I’ve tested several things
including copying folder by folder, but that doesn't work either, except for a small
folder of 220MB. I got scared thinking, is my laptop having an issue...
But I don't think so because there seem to be several people with the same problem.
Still, I found no solution. I also tested a small copy with a USB
stick, and that seems to work, so why not with an external hard drive?
I have 2 Western Digital drives, and I get the same error on both. Thank you for your help.

Hi, I have the same issue with my Seagate 320GB :) it's just the micro-USB connector on the hard drive case that is starting to wear out from constantly unplugging and plugging the cable back in ;)

Hi TiFloflo76, if it had been about my good old Maxtor, I would have
said yes maybe, but the two external disks from Western Digital are like new.
Very little used so I can say that it doesn’t come from the disks or the
USB ports, because it works on 2 other PCs. Finally, the computer doesn’t seem to be the
problem either, I did a complete test of all the peripherals, etc... from the
BIOS and everything works as it should. No errors from the hardware. But I still
get the famous message when I start a copy :( from these 2 external disks.. It might then be that my problem is "software", namely Windows >_< ?. -
With Linux? Well, I don't know it at all, I've always been on Windows
since '95 lol. Do I have to install Linux over it or how do I do it?-
Hi,
Don't install anything, it's not necessary.
Go to the Device Manager (Start, right-click Computer then properties.
Once you have clicked on the task manager, look for your external hard drive
Right-click on it and select Properties
Then in the [Power Management] tab
Uncheck the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device ..."
In the Policies tab, check the box Enable write caching on the device...
and Best performance (by default)
Confirm
and it's done.
PS: disable sleep mode and the setting that makes your main hard drive stop after X hours... Make sure your computer stays active
Go to your control panel > power options...
PS²: If your 500GB HDD is not the system drive ... Do the same operation in the Device Manager -

Hello there.
As I mentioned yesterday, I ran a diagnostic test from the BIOS and everything
is working perfectly for the hardware, so this morning I tried something else. Instead
of taking my USB hard drive without power, I took another WD one with power. And now
I finally managed to make my copies without any problems. The issue is
really that you need WD drivers for the laptop because for the other PC
even without the WD drivers it works very well, yet the other PC is also
an Alienware brand. Anyway, I'm glad to know it's not a computer problem. Thanks again for your help. I might swing by WD just in case to see if there are any drivers. I know they have them directly in their
hard drives, but when I formatted everything was deleted. And since it worked fine even without drivers, I thought it wasn’t necessary, until yesterday lol. Anyway,
thanks and have a great rest of the afternoon.
Best regards! -
Good evening, thank you for the responses.
I tried to follow the steps above, but I can't get it to work in the end.
Start - right-click on Computer and Properties -> Device Manager... From there, in the list, the first item has a yellow exclamation mark called WD SES Device USB Device. That's the external hard drive. However, when I right-click on it, I only see: General - Drivers - Details.
Also, when I plug in the USB cable, Windows always tells me that it failed to install the device, but the same thing happens on other PCs and there are no issues. This hard drive doesn't have a power supply.
It only connects via USB, sorry I should have mentioned that. I also tried updating the driver through Windows (just in case), but it finds nothing.
Is there another solution? Thank you for your help.
