What is an overlay?

I know that my card doesn't support it

    The overlays I knew were related to programs.
    For example, a program was too large to be loaded all at once. We would load the part we needed and then replace it with another one in the same memory location. These different parts of the program were called overlays.
    As for the rest, I cannot answer.
