unable to install diablo 2

Hi everyone!
Well, I have a little problem.
I'm trying to reinstall the game Diablo 2 and its expansion Lord of Destruction. I have successfully installed the game Diablo 2, but I am unable to install the add-on Lord of Destruction. I don’t understand why because I have already installed it and it was working.
I want to emphasize that my version is not pirated.

So let me explain what happens: when I install LoD (Lord of Destruction), it asks me to insert the LoD CD, up to this point everything works (the drive reads the CD),
to continue I need to insert the Diablo CD and that also works,
then I need to go back to the Lord of Destruction CD. Up until now everything installs normally, but at the very end everything freezes and it asks me to insert the Lord of Destruction CD in my drive. The problem is that it is already in the drive; it’s as if the CD is no longer detected by the drive at the very end.

I cleaned the CD thinking that dirt might have affected the reading, but to no avail.

If anyone has an idea of what could be causing this inconvenience, I would be very grateful for their help because I don’t understand how I was able to install it successfully before???

Hey, well looking left and right I found the solution.
The problem usually comes from a D2music file, that's where the installation gets blocked.
If this is indeed the case, the solution is:

- You explore the LOD CD
- You copy the file named D2xMusic
- You paste it into the directory where Diablo 2 is installed
- The file you just pasted, you rename it, and remove the little "x"
- Once your file is renamed, you can relaunch the LOD installation normally, the problem is gone.

Hi,   Have you tried during the installation to remove the disk and put it back to restart the drive? Do you use 2 CD/DVD drives? Try to reinstall it without changing the CD drive....

I indeed have 2 drives but I am performing the operation on only one.
And I tried to relaunch it.
The problem occurs only at the very end of the installation. There is only one bar left to load and it would work.

Hi, try to check if the CD is scratched! It could very well be a scratch that prevents it from reading that famous file otherwise, try borrowing the CD from a friend and test the installation. If the problem persists, check your entire disk if you properly uninstalled the game last time. I had this problem once. A file had been uninstalled incorrectly and it was impossible to reinstall. If it's your CD that's the problem, then buy the game again for 10-15 euros; it's not a huge dent in the budget!! ^^  Good luck  @@++

I have the same kind of problem, except that it’s the D2CHAR.MPQ file that won’t read!

I also want to specify that my game is original, that I installed the game, it was working, but it messed up when I reinstalled it!

I had exactly the same problem as you, but it doesn't prevent me from playing. Go through with the installation; it tells you to reinstall, ignore this message, and finish the installation.
P.S.: Personally, I did a complete installation (multiplayer + video).
Re P.S.: My little brother also has this game, so I tried it with his, and I got the same message, but anyway, it doesn't stop it from working properly.

I have another problem... I had the issue where Diablo II wouldn't load (the expansion pack is better ^^) and then it told me to check if the CD was in the drive... WELL, I did everything I could to get it started but... no way so I uninstalled the game and then reinstalled it! EXCEPT that... it told me the same thing as lionel@ except that after the installation the game doesn't start at all anymore ='( I've tried taking the CD out and putting it back in, clicking on autoplay or the Diablo II icon but nothing happens... HELP MEEEEE!!! ='(

Hello, Same for me, I reinstalled Diablo II once and it worked! I was able to play in single player! But the next day when I wanted to play again, nothing at all, either it was "insert expansion" or "please check that the Diablo game is properly inserted in the CD room and try again". Of course I did that and no, it doesn't want to anymore. I cleaned it, I reinstalled it. But it keeps giving me the same message "check blah blah blah...". I'm fed up :'(

So, I'm a fan of Diablo II and I love the Lord of Destruction expansion... I had an old computer and I changed it, then I reinstalled Diablo II and after that I tried to install the expansion, and then nothing worked... Please insert the game disc Damn, it's already there!!! What I did was put the Diablo II installation CD back in, and when it said Insert the game disc, I put in the expansion, and then it worked... Try that

Hi, I had a similar problem to all of you, namely the message "please make sure that the LOD CD is in the CD drive, and try again." Actually, it was during the installation that there was an issue because I had leftover LOD files after uninstalling it. So I searched a bit in my local disk, then in program files, then in Diablo 2 to delete the remaining folders. I was then able to install LOD normally, and this time they didn't fail to ask me for the CD key. Indeed, I think that if during the LOD installation you are not asked for the CD key, it means you have the same problem as I did, so do like I did ;)

For DIABLO 2, so that the game launches correctly and without bugs or black screens.
Install the game Diablo 2.
Go to the game's installation directory.

Right-click on diabloII.exe > properties > compatibility.
-Enable compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2
-Disable visual themes
-Disable desktop composition

For DIABLO 2 LOD
I had to copy the file D2MUSIC.MPQ
from the DIABLO 2 game CD and not from the LOD CD, then copy it into the game's installation directory.
My LOD CD did not contain the file D2MUSIC.MPQ or D2XMUSIC.MPQ.
After this manipulation, the installation goes through without any problems,
even under Vista or Seven 64 bits.
