Hello everyone,
I would need opinions and advice on the following question: I recently acquired the GIS software MapInfo through my university. However, I obviously have a Mac, so this wonnnnnnnnderful software is unusable...
Most of my teachers advised me to either create a partition on my Mac or use an emulator...
I did some research on the topic, but 1) I don't know how to use an emulator at all, 2) I am hesitant to create a partition or use an emulator for fear of "screwing up my Mac."
I've heard about Boot Camp, Parallels, WINE...

The floor is yours ;)

Configuration: Mac OS X Version 10.6.8

Hello,

To run PC software on a Mac, there are two main families of solutions:
- virtual machines (or how to have Mac and Windows):
- dual boot (or how to have Mac or Windows, with the choice made at Mac startup)

Virtual machines (or how to have Mac and Windows):
Here are the proven solutions where Windows is considered as "an application" of Mac OS X:
- VMWare Fusion (paid)
- Parallel Desktop (paid)
- VirtualBox (free)

Dual boot (or how to have Mac or Windows, with the choice made at Mac startup):
There are not 36 solutions because there is only the one proposed by Apple, and if Apple offers it, it means that the solution is validated and guaranteed by Apple. With Boot Camp, Windows is installed on its own partition, created by Boot Camp on the Mac OS X disk. Windows will live alone in its world, and unless you make a major mistake, it won't interfere with the Mac OS partition. You must strictly follow the Apple documentation to install Windows (Seven), which is as follows:
- Boot Camp
- Install and Configure Boot Camp
- Install and Configure Boot Camp Snow Leopard for Seven
- Boot Camp version 3.2
- Boot Camp version 3.3
- all Boot Camp updates

A final word: in all cases, you need to buy a Windows license as it will be required during installation.

Ok, thanks for the clarifications ;) So whether I choose the virtual machine or the partition, I need a Windows license... Isn't there a way to do it without buying Windows?
