Hello everyone, I am looking to convert a video file with the .ts extension into a compressed .avi file.
The .ts file comes from the Freebox HD, this format is very large, that's why I want to compress and convert it.

Thank you for your help!

    Another solution. In two steps:
1- Change the file extension ==> .ts becomes .avi
2- Encode using "PocketDivXEncoder" (an excellent freeware encoding tool!).

Example: with PocketDivXEncoder, a 225MB .ts file becomes 90MB .avi. But you can also specify the compression rate you want!

    To download PocketDivXEncoder:

    I hope this helps!

    Hello,

So, am I the one who skipped crucial steps or are some people looking for complications?
Especially when I read that some convert .TS to .MPG (unnecessary step since it is already an MPEG2 encoding), and the extension is just a container.

I see that for some it takes more than an hour overall, whereas for me, in the simplest scenario, for 2 hours of recording, which is 1.2 GB, I convert .TS files to .AVI (Divx) in 40 minutes (Vista, Core2Duo 7200@2.53Ghz, 4GB RAM).

I use TotalVideoConverter and only that one (sure it's paid, but you can do the same thing with MediaCoder)

First of all, I noticed that if I play the ORIGINAL video in Media Player Classic I have playback stutters, is that why you use an MPEG timecode fixer? Well, the issue disappears in Windows Media Player. But once converted, no more issues at all.

Another thing to note during the conversion, if we keep the original size of 544x576, we end up with a converted file squished in the width. After checking, we need to correct that by using the following dimensions instead of 544x576, we should use 768x576 and the appearance will be the same as during the playback of the .TS file (strange this thing).

    Process:
    1. I manually change the extension of the .TS file to .MPEG (because it's actually an MPEG file in a container)
    2. I open it with TotalVideoConverter.
    3. I select the use of the DirectX9 decoder and not the internal one which is slower (even under Vista, I presume it will take the one from DirectX10)
    4. I choose "High Quality".
    5. Among the choices, I take MS AVI > DivX (or whatever we want among the choices).
    6. I choose the destination folder
    7. I change DivX settings for Audio by setting the MP3 frequency to 44100Khz instead of 48000Khz
    8. I change the Video Bitrate which originally can be over 2000 or even 3000 to 800 (that's fine for a DivX, we can use software to calculate the exact bitrate for the size of a CD if we want but personally I store on HDD so I don't care much about the exactness of the output file)
    9. I modify the aspect by using dimensions of 768x576 instead of 544x576 and I will have the same appearance as the original file.
    10. If we want we can choose the precise start and end of the output file in case you had ads at the beginning or the end. (except cut the ads in the middle)
    11. I start the Conversion and have a small coffee or a large one for the 40-50 minutes of waiting (depending on the duration of the recording, of course)
    12. That's it :D.

For ads after what to say, it’s super simple, VirtualDub, we cut the ad parts, we save without reconversion just directly and that's it!

    I hope this helps.

PS: this works very well for me, I emphasize that I am not saying that it works on all PCs and for all recordings, I couldn't test this thoroughly especially for the aspect correction that seems to give erroneous values to the .TS file causing a squished aspect to the converted file without resizing.

You can also convert it using VLC's transcoding options: File / Stream Assistant

I found a software that converts .ts to mpeg or vob
VideoRedo (paid software :-) and then you can just reconvert it to avi...

1- You change the file extension ==> .ts becomes .avi
I am a novice in computer science and I would like to know what you mean by changing the file extension so that a .TS file becomes .avi. How do you do that? Thank you in advance.

You just need to use a file explorer that shows file extensions... not like WXP... and you simply rename your file toto.ts to toto.avi! The NERO explorer is great for that...

deselecting the "Hide extensions for known file types" option isn't bad either :)

In fact, it's surprising, but I really think that it just takes going into the folder options to specify to Windows the desire to see extensions displayed (unchecking hide extensions for known file types).

My method for converting a .ts stream from Freebox to .avi:
    1) Demultiplexing to M2V and AIFF with MPEG Streamclip
    after easily removing ads
(free except for the MPEG-2 playback module for QuickTime at €19.95)

    2) Converting to DVD with Movie Gate Lite
(also free and fast as there is no re-encoding of the MPEG file)

    From there, you can either:
3-1 - put multiple movies on a DVD with Toast
3-2 - convert your DVD to .avi with D-Vision 3

    Advantages:
Audio delay is quite rare, but just in case, you can easily sync it with MPEG Streamclip,
Movie Gate allows for automatic cropping which lets you encode only the movie without the black bars.

Apart from the inevitable stream interruptions from the Freebox, the quality of the result in .avi is TOP notch.

    Disadvantage: (only for some)
    You need a Mac.

    My experience with the Freebox

Freebox HD (.ts) to DVD : http://rohr.surlenet.net/spip.php?article405
ProjectX to demultiplex the .TS stream with timecode error correction (The important thing for audio/video synchronization)
Mpeg2Schnitt to cut out the ads
    IfoEdit to generate DVD-compatible files

Freebox HD (.ts) to Dvix (.avi) : http://rohr.surlenet.net/spip.php?article406
MPEG2Repair to fix the timecode (The important thing for audio/video synchronization)
DVBCut to cut out the ads in .ts
And MediaCoder, the ultimate tool, to encode in Divx

    AdslTV & Mencoder : http://rohr.surlenet.net/spip.php?article408
The crazy option is to start an automatic Divx encoding at the end of the recording with Mencoder.

    The solution I found:
    download SUPER
(a software that works on Windows) and follow the relatively simple instructions to convert .ts files from the Freebox to xvid or divx in an .avi container.
Advantage of the avi (which is admittedly a crappy capsule from Microsoft): it is readable by the Freebox, it is readable by a Mac, it is readable by a PC. The same reasoning applies for xvid/divx.

A few facts related to the topic:
the Freebox HD does not see the extensions .mpeg, .mp4, .wmv, .mov
according to my tests, it recognizes: .avi and .ts
otherwise, see the table below (some of the items indicated do not work in my opinion: I have never managed to get an .mkv or .wmv to work)

It's a software that encodes many formats, including TS files. I had the same problem as you. You can encode normal files into TS files. Thanks in advance. Super

    Uh!!!!!!!!!!
Without getting bogged down with tweaks in VLC.
By looking around a bit, you'll find it; you just need to know how to search. (I spent 15 minutes)
If I understood correctly, you want to lighten your Transport Stream from your Free FTP.

    HDTVtoMPEG2

    URL http://www-personal.umich.edu/~balazer/HDTVtoMPEG2/HDTVtoMPEG2_v1.11.93.zip

    You can convert to .mpg AND!!! Isolate the content by removing the ads from TF1 and the previous program because M6 was running late, and those that follow because you took a bit of security;

Normally, this Freeware does the trick: http://www.cocoonsoftware.com/SiteQMC/indexfr.htm it should also work for Dreambox

For editing, there are plenty of available and free software as well...

    Happy converting...

    Hello,

To convert video_ts to .avi, it's very simple, you load AVS VIDEO CONVERTER and run it.
For a video of about 4 GB, it takes about 4 hours.

Note that the software from AVS4YOU is paid; but you pay for one and you get all the others for free to download.

    They are convenient and efficient.

    Regards and good luck.
