problems with Pentax Optio 50 camera

Hello
the problem is as follows:
my device was working normally, I took about 20 pictures with it, and one day I turn it on to take pictures and the LCD screen is black; it only shows the options and I can enter the settings, but it's as if there was something in the lens because it's all black, yet the interface with the options is there. I checked the lens cover, it opens normally, I don't understand why the image is dark; it takes normal pictures but they're black, there's nothing.

Hello, my girlfriend is also having an issue with her Pentax OPTIO 50, except in her case the device won't turn on at all and even with new batteries, the little light (which is red) only turns on once and that's it... If anyone knows about this problem it would be nice to help us resolve it... Thank you.

I have the same problem as you. I can display the menu, view the pictures in memory, but when I set the camera to ready to take pictures, I see nothing, no image, it’s completely black. I can take the picture, the flash works fine, but obviously when I view the photo there’s nothing at all; I just got "black"???? I have no idea where this could be coming from. If you have the answer, please let me know.

Unfortunately, my device is no longer covered by warranty (only 3 months past expiration) but if it is a manufacturing issue, then that changes everything...

It's a sensor issue, we need to know if it is on the list of Sony sensors installed on several camera brands. Search the web or on 50mil of conso. If so, Sony will cover the repair.

The warranty expired on December 12, 206, I live on the island of La Réunion and
for a simple quote request, they ask me for €50 for transport fees,
plus €50 to establish a quote. I contacted Pentax's customer service
and I can expect nothing from them but canned responses, they claim not to
know the email address of the repair workshop (!!!) and give me a
phone number in metropolitan France (which exposes me to phone charges
without any guarantee of results, of course). The seller mentioned a problem with the
optical block, but he is not a specialist.
What do you advise me?

I have exactly the same problem. My device (Optio 50) won't turn on even though it hasn't been dropped. I used it the day before the breakdown and there were no issues at all. Two years ago, I bought 2 Pentax devices; since then, both devices have malfunctioned (3 breakdowns in total!). I really doubt the reliability of these devices...

It should be noted that for my other device (black screen issue), Pentax replaced it with the new model (Optio S20), which also broke down (this time it was a zoom issue...).

For some time now, my camera has been consuming batteries at a frantic pace! Whether I use already used rechargeable batteries or new ones, it takes 2 or 3 photos, and the batteries are depleted
while looking at the device, I noticed that in the battery card compartment, the battery contact tab had a particular feature
indeed, on the + pole there seems to be a surround made of some material (gray color)! in a circular shape
this spiral is not completely closed! Is that normal?

Hello! I have the same problem as you. I bought a Pentax Optio S 55 two years ago. For a few months now, it has been draining the batteries after just a few shots... and now it won't even turn on. I just get a "batteries exhausted" message even though the batteries are indeed new.
I looked in the battery compartment and nothing seems off!
Do you have any idea what it could be?

Good evening,concerning those who have battery problems, try using batteries with more than 2700mAh because below that, the power-ups were, for me, random or unsuccessful with 2000mAh. I solved it with 2800mAh which lasted for 200 photos, pleasantly surprised by this performance even if it’s not the best, but it's better than before...P.S.: I am looking for a copy of the installation CD-ROM that I lost and I can't find the drivers to use it as a webcam (not as a digital camera which is recognized as a USB stick). Hello everyone, I’ve taken apart – and when I say taken apart… my Optio 50 L and solved quite a few issues: defective screen, motor problems, button issues. However, there’s still one last detail, and not the least, when I’m in photo mode, the screen (on, wohoo!!) stays black, and the photo also appears black in the viewing menu. I have the same kind of problem as you: I've had a Pentax Optio 33 for a few months and the batteries discharge at a crazy speed, whether they are rechargeable or not. A few days ago, I changed the batteries for the second time that day and it replies "this card is not formatted" (even though I hadn't touched the memory card). I change the batteries again and then NOTHING! It doesn't turn on, not even a little light... I can't read the photos either... it won't respond at all... and it's no longer under warranty, I've had it for 3 years... I'm so upset, it worked so well! Anyway, reading all your messages makes me wonder if Pentax is such a good brand after all. I think I'm going to have to buy another one because I really think it's done for.

Hello, I had left a message on this site because I had a problem: despite having charged batteries, it didn't work!!! After several attempts, I realized it was just a battery issue. First, forget about alkaline batteries!! Don't even think about them! Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan (about 2 years), and the ones you buy new are only minimally charged (for longevity reasons). So you need to fully charge new batteries before using them... I hope this will help some of you. As for me, I bought a Pentax in October 2005 (so the 2-year warranty has expired!!!!) and on December 25th (yes, not cool), I was happily taking my Christmas photos when the screen went black; all the menu functions were present but there was no image on the screen..... After almost an hour, my camera started working normally again but (and yes, there has to be a BUT) I had quite a surprise when I uploaded my photos to my computer... there were scratches on my photos!!!???!!! I see that people talk about sensors, zoom.... but never about ruined photos after the black screen issue... Is this a progression of issues with Pentax??? Could someone please respond, that would be super nice because I really don’t want to part with it yet (sniff....:-(....) maybe I can still do something with it lol THANK YOU

Hello, I had the same problem of a black screen with a stuck shutter. I disassembled the optical block and gently pushed the shutter blades back with a micro screwdriver, and it reopened and is working again.

Good evening Paul, I had the same problem and I found out: on the memory card, there is a small tab that must have been pushed; you need to push it back the other way. The locked card will disappear; I hope this works for you, it works for me, good luck!!!!

Hello,  2 battery problems:   1) does not turn on with rechargeable and recharged batteries.  however, it works with alkaline batteries.  So I put a piece of aluminum foil to make contact between the + and - with rechargeable batteries, and it worked again.   2) The next day, with the same system:  EXHAUSTED BATTERIES  however, it works with alkaline batteries.     I don't know what to think anymore and I hope the manufacturer is reading the forum.   IF ANYONE HAS A SOLUTION, I THANK THEM IN ADVANCE.  @+

Hello! I also have a problem with a Pentax Optio L70. When I turn it on, the lens extends, the camera beeps three times, then the lens retracts halfway and the camera turns off... I called the hotline and they asked me to send the device for a repair estimate, but they are unable to diagnose it over the phone or even give me a price range... I might end up sending it at my own expense, only to find out that the repair would cost as much as a new device. If anyone has any idea what the issue might be, I’m all ears; otherwise, if I prefer not to start a process, I’ll just buy another one directly, but I wouldn't recommend Pentax, their devices have too many flaws.
