Dead CPU?

Hello,
For the past few days, my PC no longer starts - let me explain: mechanically everything works (power supply OK, the CPU fan spins), but there are no "beeps" and the relay to the screen no longer activates - the indicator light on the front of the screen stays orange.
The chipset fan on my motherboard hadn’t been working for a long time, but the PC was functioning very well without it, so I wasn’t overly alarmed until two weeks ago when I started experiencing more frequent "freezes" and "physical memory dumps".
I tested the RAM sticks all night with memtest, no errors found. I then thought about the chipset fan, I replaced it with a metal cooler - since then there's been no possibility of starting, with or without the heatsink.
Clear CMOS all night with the motherboard completely disconnected, I got one long beep + two short beeps upon restarting, but that's it...
I thought the motherboard was dead, so I bought another one but got the same result (no difference - it "runs", but no beeps or display on the screen).
This is all to ask: is this characteristic of a dead processor?
Does a dead CPU usually generate "beeps"?
I’ve already bought 2 motherboards for nothing (I messed up the socket for the first one, so I got a store credit... and I bought the second one elsewhere since there was no socket 462 in the first store :s) so I'm hesitant to buy a new CPU...
Thanks for your advice
