Initialize hard drive = format?

Hello,

I wanted to install my WD 2TB external hard drive full of files as an internal drive in a desktop, but the drive was not recognized.

To check if I hadn't lost everything, I put the HDD back in the enclosure, but now Windows is asking me to initialize the disk.

At worst, I was thinking of trying to recover my files with software like Smart Recovery, but if I initialize the disk, am I risking losing my files???

Configuration: Windows 7 / Safari 534.13

Hello, yes you run the risk of losing your data if you initialize the disk, it's probably just a "simple" filesystem problem, check out the software testdisk:
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_FR
It has helped me recover my data after a bad manipulation.
If you need help we are here ;-)

Otherwise, what is the filesystem of your external hard drive?
