Scribus Download Failed

Hello,

I just downloaded Scribus for Mac several times from the link provided by scribus.net, which is: https://sourceforge.net/projects/scribus/files/

But each time, when I try to open the application, it blinks as if it’s going to open... and no: the Scribus application has unexpectedly quit, that’s the message that appears. Then I relaunch it and it’s the same.

Can someone help me?

Thank you so much!

Configuration: Mac OS X / Safari 533.18.5

Hello,

I just tested it. No problem on my end. But I didn't proceed with the complete setup for EPS files; I downloaded the application, simply dragged it into my Applications folder, then launched it, and everything is fine. I just have the startup message inviting me to complete the installation.
To resolve your issue, try completely deleting the Scribus folder that was installed in your Preferences folder. Here:
Hard_Drive / Users / your_name / Library / Preferences ...
When you next launch Scribus, it will rebuild it from scratch.
Generally, the issue in case of "unexpectedly quit" comes from a corrupted file in the preferences folder.

Good luck

EDIT: for a complete installation, you also need to install Ghostscript.
https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Ghostscript
https://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/

The magazine Avosmac - issue 98 September 2009 - which you can purchase as a PDF explains the installation in detail. (It may have changed since then).
Issues 90 and 93 also discuss using Scribus

Hello, thanks!

It still doesn't work: I've completely deleted everything from Scribus - whether in the applications or in my username/library/preferences, where there was indeed a Scribus folder. I also cleared out everything in downloads, on the desktop, and in the trash.

It seems to me that for Scribus to work, it needs Libraries A and B and Ghostscript? And for Ghostscript, it needs Foomatic?

I'm running on Mac 10.4.11, so I downloaded Foomatic-RIP 4.0.4 and gplgs-8.71.dmg for Mac 10.3 - 10.6 and installed them "successfully," as the installation assistants told me.

Only then did I download Scribus - which I had completely erased as advised. I dragged the icon into the applications folder. I go there to look for it, double-click... And it keeps "quitting unexpectedly"... I restart and it's the same.

Could it be the libraries that I didn't download this time? Or more likely a configuration issue with my computer?

Thanks again, have a great day!

I haven't installed Ghostscript on my end. And it works anyway. I just get a message saying that EPS (Postscript) documents will not be supported. (Or a similar message). So, installing Ghostscript doesn't seem necessary if you are not using EPS files. At least in my case.
The EPS format is a type of page description supported by certain printer models and software like Illustrator, for example.

I think the issue on your side comes from the version of Scribus downloaded in relation, not only to the version of Mac OS, but also to the type of processor of the Mac. I've tested with the Mac version 1.3.8 on my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running Mac OS 10.6.

I could be wrong, of course, but that's my impression based on the symptoms encountered.

It would be worth trying with an older version.

Page 29 of Avosmac no. 98 from September 2009 states this about the installation of Scribus 1.3.5:
http://imagik.fr/view-rl/330524

Good luck

At certain moments, I also thought it would be my computer's fault (Mac OS X 10.4.11 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), so I tried version 1.3.7 earlier, but it was the same.

I notice that the latest stable version is 1.3.3.14 (?) but apparently it's not available for Mac (?).

In any case, the latest version of Scribus is being proposed everywhere.

Do you have any other solutions in mind to make my computer capable of running Scribus 1.3.8 or where I can find older versions available for Mac?

Thank you for your help,

For Mac, the version before 1.3.8 is 1.3.6. You can find it here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scribus/files/scribus-devel/1.3.6/Scribus_1.3.6.dmg/download

However, if you are on Intel Mac, it should usually work with 1.3.8 .. although .. test with version 1.3.6 after removing everything from version 1.3.8
I can't remember which version switched to the X11 environment on Mac OS 10.
(In the past, it was necessary to use X11 as a graphical environment instead of Mac OS, as with many free software applications)

Thank you for your help. I tried to download X11 but a newer software version already exists, so I do have X11, right? I'm also using Open Office.

Everything is cleared everywhere for version 1.3.8, in the applications, the dock, and the library preferences.

I just downloaded Scribus 1.3.6 from scribus.net or sourceforge.net... But it’s a folder containing an executable. So it seems to me that this version - and the previous ones - do not exist for Mac?

Unless you are kind enough to give me a new piece of advice, maybe I should give up for now at least?

What I'm interested in is preparing visuals in CMYK for printing.

An executable??? It's indeed a file contained in a disk image of type .dmg.. but .dmg files are not meant for Windows..

On this link:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/scribus/files/scribus-devel/1.3.6/Scribus_1.3.6.dmg/download
I just downloaded this .dmg disk image, and the result is that inside I have a Mac OS application of type Universal Binary. That is to say, designed for Mac Intel and Mac PowerPC.

I launched this application = no problem except once again the message regarding Ghostscript, but otherwise it works fine...

There must be a manipulation error on your part that I can't quite explain.

Do you have a firewall that is masking information about your configuration??
which could explain a redirect to another type of download

Good evening,

I followed the recommended link: it indeed does not download a folder containing an executable but a .dmg.

I thought it was going to work but no, still the message that "quits unexpectedly" and that "nothing has been affected." I made sure to erase all traces of Scribus beforehand.

I don’t know if I have firewalls - nor do I really know what that is - but I don't think I have one - precisely because I don't know. I can say that I don't have one unless it comes by default with the Mac. But how can I be sure of that? Do you have any other suggestions?

What I don't understand is that you say the .dmg image contains an "executable." There may just be a misunderstanding between us.
When you open your .dmg image, you should find a ready-to-use application inside.
If in your Finder preferences (the "Advanced" tab), you choose to have the system display all extensions, you should see this application with the .app extension and not an application with the .exe suffix, which would be intended for Windows.
Example:
http://imagik.fr/view-rl/330776

Warning: do not launch the application from its disk image, but move it first to the Applications folder.

If the problems persist, I suggest deleting everything related to Scribus, for example by searching for the term Scribus using EasyFind, which is more effective than Spotlight:
http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/

Then, perform a deep cleaning with Onyx, restart your Mac, and download the latest version of Scribus for Mac again. (Version 1.3.8, since an older version exhibited the same symptoms.)

For cleaning with Onyx, follow this method:
https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-19842708-nettoyer-pour-la-premiere-fois-son-mac-os-x#1

If the preliminary volume check done with Onyx indicates that you need to repair the volume, then follow this procedure:
https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/15279-entretenir-et-reparer-mac-os-x-10-6-et-versions-anterieures#demarrage-et-reparation-a-partir-du-cd-ou-du-dvd-d-installation-de-mac-os

Also run a "Preferential Treatment":
https://www.jonn8.com/html/pt.html
This freeware will let you know if any of your existing preference files are corrupted and could potentially be responsible

After that, at least we can be sure to try on a healthy basis.

Hello,

I've tried everything:

- I searched with Spotlight and deleted everything I found related to Scribus.
- I couldn't download EasyFind because my computer (10.4.11) is apparently not compatible.
- But I was able to download OnyX, which prompted me to repair the disk, which I did using the installation CD through Disk Utility. It confirmed to me that the necessary repairs following the checks were done. I verified again afterward and it was good.
- I went back to Onyx and ran the automation, which went smoothly.
- Finally, I ran Preferential Treatment: for user preferences, everything was in order; that wasn't the case for system preferences - there were several .plist files or others with red comments on the right saying I didn't have permission for them: I sent them all to the trash and emptied it.

The computer had to be spotless (?), so I downloaded the latest version of Scribus, went to find it in Applications, and launched it. Although all the other applications were closed and the desktop was all clean... It “quit unexpectedly again.”

Previously, I found this error message that is the same that appears in the report you can send to Apple:

“PID: 639

Link (dyld) error:

Hello,

I just found a case that is strangely similar to yours. A case where the person solved the problem using some commands in the Terminal.
See this page:
http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/scribus@lists.scribus.info/14026324.html

Hoping this resolves the issue for you as well.

Hello,

Absolutely, it sounds like the same thing, but I don't know how to do it, from where.

In my opinion, the first step is this

cd /libfreetype-2.3.12
./configure
make
cp /freetype-2.3.12/objs/.libs/libfreetype.6.dylib
/Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

But what does that mean?

Then you should see the following error due to ghostscript etc.:

Symbol not found: _open$UNIX2003
Referenced from:
/Volumes/Disk2/Scribus.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/libtiff.3.dylib
Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

For which the solution would be this:

mv /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/libtiff.3.dylib mv
/Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/oldlibtiff.3.dylib
cd /tiff-3.9.2
./configure
make
cp /tiff-3.9.2/libtiff/.libs/libtiff.3.dylib
/Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

After all that, libtiff.3.dylib (is it a file maybe?) would contain _open$UNIX2003 (which was missing at the beginning?).

If I understand correctly, for my configuration, a file is missing? I think I could, with a bit of time, find out where to put it. But where do I get it from?

Always listening to you, always grateful,

The analysis seems correct overall, but in this case, the mv command seems intended to rename the file libtiff.3.dylib to oldlibtiff.3.dylib
This is to allow placing another file with the same original name in that location
The cd command should mean "change directory" and cp "copy".

So, we can imagine the scenario of, initially, renaming the original file, going into /tiff-3.9.2 and copying another file libtiff.3.dylib to place it in Frameworks / in lieu of the one that has just been renamed with the term "old" at the beginning of its original name

I don't think the missing file at the start is _open$UNIX2003, but rather that this is the point where the software no longer knows how to continue the launch of the program.

That said, I am not a specialist in Terminal commands.
It would be necessary to test these commands "as is". From what I see, there is no risk. The only possible damage would be in the Scribus application. It would just be a matter of working on a copy or re-downloading if necessary.
I imagine that the Terminal isn't even absolutely necessary. If my interpretation is correct, it would be possible to perform this manipulation manually, by right-clicking on the Scribus application and choosing "Show Package Contents".. to then navigate through the application, move, rename, etc..

I no longer have Scribus at the moment to verify these different points in the package, and test, but anyway, in my setup, I don't have the /tiff-3.9.2 directory. In fact, that's the point on which I have some questions.. differences between Mac OS 10.4 and 10.6 maybe?

I think we have reached the point where I do not fully understand... Yet it should be relatively simple. But the mv command, files.dylib, directory (?) /tiff-3.9.2, Frameworks/, Terminal, commands... I have no idea unless it’s through my imagination.

Do I just need to rename files?

If you can, please feel free to guide me step by step like you did in the link for cleaning - which is very clear - or as you would guide a complete novice - which I practically am.

I think we have reached the point where I don't fully understand...

And perhaps I don't understand much more either ;-)

If I look at the page in question, analyzing it, it seems to come from a person with programming tools who shared the solutions provided at their level to the launch issues of Scribus 1.3.6 and 1.3.7 on Mac OS 10.4.11/

The first part of their message states:

Link (dyld) error: Symbol not found: _open$UNIX2003 Referenced from: /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/libfreetype.6.dylib Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

This message says, if I'm not mistaken, that the system cannot find _open$UNIX2003 in the libfreetype.6.dylib file which should be found in
/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

In my case, on my system, I do have the file:
/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib, but I cannot examine its content.

Thus, the person indicates that the cause comes from the fact that in their case, the file
libSystem.B.dylib, although present, does not contain the expected file _open$UNIX2003, but instead contains a file named _freopen$UNIX2003
They add that libfreetype-2.3.12 creates a file named libfreetype.6.dylib which does not contain either _open$UNIX2003 or _freopen$UNIX2003.
At this stage, personally, I don't know what libfreetype-2.3.12 is, but I suppose it is a programming tool. Just a guess.

Then, this person says they can solve the problem with these commands:
cd /libfreetype-2.3.12 ./configure make cp /freetype-2.3.12/objs/.libs/libfreetype.6.dylib /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

Which, for me at least, means:
cd /libfreetype-2.3.12
for "go into the directory /libfreetype-2.3.12" (so, one must have such a directory on their disk)
./configure make

I don't know how to correctly interpret these 2 lines...

Then:
cp /freetype-2.3.12/objs/.libs/libfreetype.6.dylib /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

- here I understand: copy libfreetype.6.dylib from /freetype-2.3.12/objs/.libs/ and paste it into /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks

She then says:
this small procedure, fixes the first problem. because ghostscript is not installed, the software tells me i can't use EPS images or Print Preview. so i installed ghostscript. then, to export a CMYK separation, when i try to activate "display CMYK" on print preview window, Scribus closes immediately. here is a part of the libtiff error i saw for 1.3.6:

So, in clear terms: "This small procedure fixed the first problem. Because Ghostscript is not installed, the system warns me that I won't be able to use EPS images or Print Preview. So I installed Ghostscript. Then to export a CMYK separation, when I tried to activate "Display CMYK" in the Print Preview window, Scribus closed immediately"

here is a part of the libtiff error i saw for 1.3.6:

for "Here is a part of the error that I saw for 1.3.6"

Link (dyld) error: Symbol not found: _open$UNIX2003 Referenced from: /Volumes/Disk2/Scribus.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/libtiff.3.dylib Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

again to the terminal:

= "Again in the Terminal"

mv /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/libtiff.3.dylib mv /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/oldlibtiff.3.dylib cd /tiff-3.9.2 ./configure make cp /tiff-3.9.2/libtiff/.libs/libtiff.3.dylib /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

The first command then:
"mv /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/libtiff.3.dylib mv
/Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/oldlibtiff.3.dylib
"
Personally, what I translate from this command is:
"go to the file libtiff.3.dylib located in /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/ and rename it as:
oldlibtiff.3.dylib
Then the next phase:
cd /tiff-3.9.2 ./configure make

"cd /tiff-3.9.2" to go to the directory /tiff-3.9.2 - probably a directory of a programming tool like before..
./configure
make </code>

= still the same commands that I don't understand correctly, but I guess they are intended to create a file, just like before.

Then:
cp /tiff-3.9.2/libtiff/.libs/libtiff.3.dylib
/Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

and there we would have:
-copy the file libtiff.3.dylib from /tiff-3.9.2/libtiff/.libs/ and put the copy in /Applications/Scribus.app/Contents/Frameworks/

now everything's fine, same fix for 1.3.6 and 1.3.7.

"Everything works correctly. Same remedy for 1.3.6 and 1.3.7"

the original libtiff.3.dylib also has _open$UNIX2003 in its contents, but the new file does not. all my files are intel executables only, i don't know how to compile universal. i'm only sure it works on this configuration. hope this helps, thank you for your time
.
"The original file libtiff.3.dylib also contains _open$UNIX2003, but the new file does not. All my files are functional for an Intel processor. I don't know how to do a universal compilation. I am only certain that this works in this configuration. Hoping this helps. Thank you for your time."

There you go, this is what I gather from this page... and I admit that afterwards I won't be able to say much more about it... Maybe someone more qualified than me in this area will know ?? :-)

Good evening,

I am always amazed on this forum to find that there are good souls out there ready to help others just like that and willing to spend their time!

Thank you sincerely, I will try to find all these paths and rename files, etc., as soon as I have a bit more time. I won’t hesitate to keep you updated if I succeed and let you know how I did it in that case.

It would be cool to have Scribus, if only to see what it can do! ))

For now, my Open Office files are going for printing tomorrow - I tinkered with the colors to try to get the CMYK as close as possible to the RGB...

Thanks again and have a great week!

Gratefully,

I believe I know that Scribus is essentially a layout software that supports the constraints related to the printing industry in DTP. It takes into account the Postscript layout language (EPS) and printing in CMYK with ink dosage, etc. In short, a free version of InDesign or Xpress.
I have some magazines that discuss its usage a bit. (Avosmac has talked about it in several issues). But I admit I've only skimmed through them. This is because I use Pages for my layouts, which are quite simplistic, to be honest, and in addition, Photoshop, Aperture, or even Capture NX for photo retouching. But I don't need EPS or CMYK. (which Photoshop handles, of course). In a professional DTP situation, Scribus can indeed be very interesting. But for personal use, it's different.

I wish you a very good week as well and good luck for the future.
