Firewood scam on Le Bon Coin

Hello,
I too just narrowly escaped a scam following an ad posted on Le Bon Coin for firewood.
The person, a certain Nicolas ***, wouldn’t you know it… asks for a cash mandate to be handed over to the delivery truck driver at the time of delivery.
In the end, he asks you to check on a site belonging to the postal bank to see if your mandate is validated, and that's when you give the magic code!!! The site is fake of course; in fact, afterwards you realize there’s a mistake in the link...
I got lucky...

his number is 0643609262.
his emails are full of mistakes!
and the La Poste cash mandate method once again!
I’m forwarding the info to the police... to condemn this type of behavior!

One just needs to think more intelligently to avoid falling for the trap:

The price of a stere is between €35 (when it's a bargain) and €55 or even €60.

If you find a stere for less than 35, 30, or 25, just walk away; it seems completely logical to me.

By the way, I'll give you a tip that's not meant for slackers, but that's another story.

There are companies everywhere where you can cut your own wood at a bargain price.

There's a company in Beaumont-le-Roger (27 Eure) that I go to from time to time, the stere of wood costs €14, but it's up to us to cut it. So of course, we spend the whole day there; you have to bring your chainsaw and your trailer, but in the end, do the math for 20 steres.

14 x 20 = €280 + car gas ~€40 = €320 + possibly renting a trailer + chainsaw = €24 + €18 (for the whole day for both) = €42

So that's 280 + 42 = about €322. A trailer, a friend always has one to lend you, the chainsaw too, so that's at worst the price; otherwise, €280 for 20 steres.

Now call a seller, on average €55 per stere.

55 x 20 = €1100 plus some don't offer delivery +€100, so €1200.

So, paying €280 instead of €1200, isn't that a good deal?

But you have to get your act together on Saturday morning bright and early...

DANS LA MARNE does not deliver the account either, but we realize once it's sorted, they never answer the phone, by email they play tricks for weeks saying they will deliver the rest and always cancel, starting with 5 steres we end up with 3.3, so very dishonest people: here are the scoundrels.

  Good evening, the same observation with the company LACREUSE this morning, not in Marne, they are in the Ardennes, the pile seems small to me, we stack the wood and realize that there are only 4 steres instead of 6 ordered, once paid in cash. There’s nothing more to be done.

  1 cubic meter of wood cut into 50cm pieces seems to amount to only 0.8 cubic meters, and that's normal.
  1 cubic meter of wood cut into 33cm pieces seems to amount to only 0.7 cubic meters, which is normal too, because 1 cubic meter is measured in 1m, and the wood takes up less space once cut.

    Let's be honest, 1 stere is 1 stere, 1m x 1m... no matter how it's cut, and that's why the shorter you want it, the more expensive it gets, because if they're selling you a stere, they have to deliver 1 stere and not 0.8... 0.7 and some grease... or they do it at the price of 1m... Otherwise, you're not talking about stere, otherwise it's a scam...

    The stere is by definition a "scam" since it is a unit that continues to be used despite its long-standing ban. It does not correspond to "1mx1m" but to the APPARENT volume occupied by the wood that would be stacked perfectly parallel in a container with dimensions of 1m; its value is considered real, apparent volume identical to the real volume, when the logs measure 1m, but says nothing about the other dimensions except for length when these logs are not parallelepiped and of the same cross-section.
    
    There is already a flaw from the start, even if the logs are exactly 1m long where the stere is deemed to be worth 1m3, the shape of the logs is irregular and thus we have no idea of the voids between their stacking.
    
    If the logs are only 50cm long, I have the same amount of wood that takes up less space; the gaps are smaller without being able to mathematically measure them; even ADEME publishes a so-called "piling" coefficient which is therefore perfectly arbitrary and which in this case is worth 1.25: instead of having 1m3, it is accepted that I have only 1/1.25=0.8m3 and the seller is therefore within their rights to deliver this last volume.
    
    It is evident that if the seller delivers 1m3 in 50cm logs, they will charge more (there is more wood) and it is potentially justified if that is the customer's requirement and the original logs are larger to charge for the cutting, there being no other reason for "the shorter it is, the more expensive it is."
    
    These measurements, whether in steres or m3, are therefore the gateway to all sorts of cheating; they are practically uncontrollable, which does not mean that all sellers intentionally cheat; one could argue that the only accurate measure would be weight, but that is not even true since it depends on the moisture level of the wood and its species.

  A well-meaning person sells you wood for €43, cut into 33 cm pieces.
  
  The catch is that the 10 steres ordered turn into 5.7 steres measured, but you pay full price for the 3.3 steres of sawdust. This person comes with his wife and their little white dog.
  The vehicle is a small rental flatbed from Intermarché. Their phone number is 0761245812. The region is around Lons-le-Saunier. No invoice.

  10 steres = 10 m^3 of wood in ONE meter long.. If cut into 50 cm or 33 cm, the volume is lower..
  
  So 10 st in 50 cm gives 8 m^3 and 7 m^3 in 33 cm..
  
  Indeed, you are missing some, around 1.3 m^3 if you measured 5.7 m^3..... That's definitely outside the margin of error!!

Attention, someone is currently selling wood on the Leboncoin site in Gironde, but it's a scam: they come in pairs, dump the ordered wood on your lawn, and despite your doubts, they claim that the paid quantity is there, but once you stack it, you realize it's far from enough. In the meantime, the ad is deactivated and no one answers the phone.
The next day, the ad reappears identical except for the seller's name, location (Lesparre, Mérignac, St Médard, Bassens... Bordeaux region), and phone number.
He goes by names like: William, Denis, Niko, firewood, oak, Spirit mbl, spv33, Marc...

I was in transcach.. I almost got away with it too, supposedly the delivery person can't accept cash, luckily I didn't want to pay online... as for the check, I hadn't offered one since it wasn't stated that it was a professional, but when they talk about their delivery people, it means they have a business. What bothers me is that they have my personal address... thankfully I have guard dogs and I've made a report... anyway, it's the same thing.

especially since cash mandates no longer exist in France, you have to go through Western Union which is not any more secure (except for the scammer)!
but maybe they don't know this yet in Mali, Mauritania or wherever...
and it can't be said enough, LBC is meant for local purchases near you, with, in your case, a professional who is known in your area.

Well, I think that tonight I smelled a scam regarding wood delivery at a very attractive price due to a so-called large stock of wood in 33cm, and I was asked to pay by a neo-?? And he explained the process to me! I told him that this payment method didn't suit me and I was canceling the order!! For now, no response??
