[Ubuntu] Exit status 127 error

Hello,

Recently, a package from one of the automatic updates (linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic) gave me this error message: 

E: linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic: the installed post-installation script subprocess returned an exit status error 127

I left it aside for a while, but upon restarting, my hard drive (internal) and USB devices were no longer mounted. I used the disk utility and Gparted to try to mount them, but in vain. I attempted manually with commands found online, but nothing changed.
I researched this "exit error 127", scoured the internet, but none of the solutions work to finish the installation of this broken package =(
Moreover, with the manipulations I tried, I have other packages that are impossible to install:

    Commence par taper dans un terminal :
    http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/terminal#ou_est-il 

    sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade


    En cas d'erreur copie colle les messages en question. Idem avec ces commandes : 

    sudo aptitude install linux-image-generic linux-image-generic-pae

    Phew!
    It seems like everything is back to normal =)

    Once the GRUB configuration was done, I rebooted and it looks good; I have access to all my peripherals and no more error messages

    However, during boot, in addition to Windows, I have at least a dozen entries like:
    linux-generic-pae
    linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic
    linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic
    linux-image-2.6.32-23-generic
    etc...

    In any case, thank you very much!
    Just if you could tell me what happened and how you resolved the issue, I would be interested

    Thank you for writing "Ça" and not "Sa," it's really the mistake that annoys me. Your error was due to the absence of the file /etc/default/grub. As a result, grub (the boot loader, the menu that appears at startup and offers the various bootable kernels) was in a shaky state. 

    update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic Running postinst hook script /usr/sbin/update-grub. /etc/default/grub: 9: splash": not found


    This caused a cascading error when unpacking the kernel updates. So I told you how to recreate the missing file.
