The French Association of Mobile Operators is launching an information campaign encouraging users of mobile phones to adopt vigilance reflexes.

On Wednesday, June 14, the national police and the French Association of Mobile Operators (Afom) published figures regarding mobile phone thefts. The thefts have decreased by 14% compared to the record year of 2003 and by 500 thefts per year compared to last year, for a total of 48.1 million devices.

However, behind these encouraging figures lies another reality: 28% of these thefts were committed with violence.

Thus, Afom is relaunching its national information campaign on the fact that it is possible to block mobile phones just like SIM cards, in order to make it impossible for thieves to use the device.

To do this, one simply needs to note the IMEI number, a fifteen-digit number uniquely identifying the device, which appears on the original box of the mobile device and behind each mobile battery. It can also be displayed on the screen by dialing *#06# on the keypad.

If the mobile phone is stolen, it will be enough to specify this famous IMEI number when filing the report and to send a copy of the report to your mobile operator, who will register this number in a database common to all French operators.

In practice, the thief can still resell the phone abroad, but Canada has anticipated this problem by federating an international database, which already involves 19 countries and 42 operators.
